I've always been a bit of an awkward person, and for me, first encounters with new people and places are honestly the worst. I was recently looking back on freshman year and how terribly awkward my first week of classes was. Thinking about it, I realized there were a lot of things that I could have done differently to make my first week more enjoyable. Here are 10 tips for conquering the awkwardness of the first week of classes as an incoming college freshman.
1. Smile!
If you seem happy, people will be more likely to talk to you. Smiling also helps you to give off a friendly vibe and can increase your chances of making friends during the first week.
2. Find something you have in common with the people you meet.
It will give you a base conversation to start with, and it will make it easier to get to know them.
3. Ask questions if you need help!
If you've only been to campus a few times, chances are you aren't going to know your way around. If you need help finding something, ask! People are generally really friendly on campus and willing to point you in the right direction if you're lost.
4. Research where you're going ahead of time.
There are maps online that can show you where classrooms, dining halls and dorms are. They're great tools to keep you from missing class or a lunch date with friends.
5. Try to make friends in your classes within the first week.
It will be great because you'll always have someone to sit with, and you'll be able to work together to make sure you understand the class material.
6. Share phone numbers with the people you meet!
It'll be easier to make meal plans with them, get together to work on projects and group assignments and to have friends to hang out with in your free time!
7. Invite someone to lunch during the week.
Getting a meal together after class can help build friendships and allow you to get to know each other better!
8. Make excuses to meet people.
I know it sounds strange, but something as simple as asking how to complete a homework problem or asking for a spotter at the gym can turn into a friendship that lasts throughout your college years.
9. Try to remember the names of all the people you meet.
Calling someone by their name establishes a more personal connection with them, and they will definitely appreciate it and make an effort to remember yours!
10. Remember, college is the beginning of a new chapter in your life.
So what if you were a bit awkward in your high school years? College gives you the chance to redefine yourself. Be whoever you want to be! It will make the experience more enjoyable in the long run.
