As the old adage goes "mother knows best." As much as you may not want to admit it, a quote like this does exist for a reason. Here are ten times Mother really did know best.
1. When she said that boy was no good for you
No one wants to admit that their mother was right about their love life, but there is always at least one guy who doesn’t live up to prince charming. Whether he broke your heart, or just wasn’t the guy for you, your mom could spot this frog from a mile away.
2. When she told you to wear that jacket
Fashion over freezing right? Wrong. You thought your t-shirt or long sleeve could handle the breeze, but when the temperature dropped, you immediately regretted leaving that coat at home. You’ll know for next time to bring that jacket.
3. When you thought mismatching clothes looked cute, but she knew better
When you look back at your favorite outfit consisting of a green sweater and hot pink skirt, you cringe and remember your mom’s fashion advice on looking like a watermelon. You thought you looked great, but she disagreed. You will forever remember how right she was about mismatching clothes.
4. When she spotted that toxic best friend before you did
That girl/guy whom eventually stuck a knife in your back, was never liked by your mom. Though she allowed you to make your own friends, she knew which ones were loyal and which were not. You may not head her warning, but that friend will evidently show you their true colors. Once again, mother knew best.
5. When you went through a phase and heard, “you’re not going be to like this forever”
We all have dark times. Some were filled with albums of Justin Bieber at age 12, others went through a phase with blue eyeshadow and thick eyeliner. You thought she could not possibly understand your new interests, and that you peaked in your identity with Aaron Carter posters all over your wall. As time went on, you grew out of it and can now look back and have a laugh.
6. When she pointed out how you were not acting your age
Everyone wants to grow up too fast so you throw on some heels at age 15, and start talking like you’re age 25. Mothers are quick to put you in your place though, and to remind you that you are not as grown as you think. Acting too young or too old, she was right when she said you were not acting your age.
7. When she taught you not to be wasteful
“Eat your food, there are starving kids in Africa,” she said. You heard this line many times when you did not want to finish your spinach, but it ultimately taught you not to waste food or anything else for that matter.
8. When she reminded you that family is always there
No matter the friends or partners that walked into your life, your mother was always there to remind you that family stays. Even at an age where you “hated” your parents and didn’t think they understood, she was right in how permanent your family is. These people are more than taken chairs at Thanksgiving, but your true support system.
9. When she told you that you would understand when you were older
A line that you will remember for the years to come, is one that is quite possibly the truest of them all. The more time that passes, the more you realize what you could not at an earlier age. It may be about worries, friendships, challenges you face, or what will bring you happiness. As your body and mind grow, wisdom grows with it.
10. When she told you that you would soon truly appreciate her for the caring mother she is
It may take a short amount of time to appreciate your mother, it may not. You will eventually begin to see the sacrifices she made to bring you into the world safe and happy. Through arguments at family dinners, and tears of joy through important moments, your mom will be there every step of the way.
To every mom or child, I hope some of these ring true. Mother sometimes really does know best.
