I've been on a real throwback kick recently, and I've come to realize that most of the songs I've been listening to are from super cheesy movies from the late 90s to early 00s. So, here are the ten best throwback songs from movies. Come take a journey with me!
1) "Bittersweet Symphony"--The Verve (from the movie Cruel Intentions)
There are very few things as thrilling as watching Sarah Michelle Gellar's character go down in this movie, and the song playing at the end just makes it all the better. That violin solo at the beginning. Pure gold.
2) "Can't Take My Eyes Off Of You"--Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons (from the movie 10 Things I Hate About You)
When Heath Ledger sings this on the staircase to Julia Stiles?! Clearly, one of the most adorable moments in the movie. I guarantee you listening to this will bring you back to that moment in the film! It sure did for me.
3) Kiss Me--Sixpence None the Richer (from the movie She's All That)
Throwing it back to that bygone era where Freddie Prinze Jr. acting like a complete and utter douche was considered swoon worthy and when Rachel Leigh Cook's character was taking none of his crap. This song. Played at every wedding everywhere on the face of the planet. And I don't blame those happy couples cause it's such a catchy song.
4) There She Goes--The La's (from the movie The Parent Trap)
The London cityscape! The young Lindsay Lohan! The quotes! All of those good things that made a late '90s Disney movie. This movie has just the BEST soundtrack. Whenever this song comes on, instantly, I think of "The Parent Trap" and the nostalgia that comes with that movie.
5) Rollin' with my Homies--Coolio (from the movie Clueless)
I know, I know. "But Evan, what about No Doubt? Or Salt-n-Pepa?" Okay, readers, before you mutiny on me, just remember the scene where Elton helps Tai after she was hit in the head at the party and this song comes on! How sweet is that? But also, Tai is kind of Clueless' version of Ducky from "Pretty in Pink", and don't we all love Ducky?
6) Dreams--The Cranberries (from the movie You've Got Mail)
If you've read any of my articles, you'll know that one of my favorite movies of all time is the Tom Hanks-Meg Ryan gem. It also has one of the best soundtracks ever. Listen to it, if you haven't, but watch the film if you haven't also. The film will change your world and will also have you quoting some of the best lines Nora Ephron ever wrote.
7) Wishin' and Hopin'--Ensemble (from the movie My Best Friend's Wedding)
Going back in time to when I first watched this movie and all subsequent times when I've put this movie on where I would watch this opening sequence an unhealthy amount of times. This song. So good. And so adorable. And the movie is also a little gem of a film, so that's a total plus.
8) When You Say Nothing At All--Ronan Keating (from the movie Notting Hill)
"I'm just a boy...standing in front of a girl...telling her I love her". Hugh Grant, you cheeky bastard! This song though, when Hugh Grant and Julia Roberts hold hands and walk through the park. So good. This song is also just so good. Ah, the memories.
9) Kiss from a Rose--Seal (from the movie Batman Forever)
I get this isn't a romantic comedy at all, but this song is one of the best songs from a Batman movie...like ever. You hear it everywhere. And it's Seal. And it's so early '90s, and also before George Clooney besmirched the name of the Dark Knight by wearing the weird dominatrix-esque Batman suit.
10) My Heart Will Go On--Celine Dion (from the movie Titanic)
I need not say more about this song, do I? Peak 90s movie song-dom.
I know I forgot a lot, but if you have any other suggestions, feel free to comment and share on this article!
