10 Thoughts You Have During Dead Week

The one week of the semester that causes more stress than every other week combined.

The most dreaded week of the year is finally here: the week before finals, aka dead week. With dead week comes lack of sleep, a lot of coffee and energy drinks, stress crying, procrastination, and finally, the major struggle to study everything you can before your finals.

This week is not just “dead” because (most) classes are cancelled so students can prepare for finals, but is “dead” because that’s how students feel at this point in the semester. Sleep is nonexistent, we are overloaded with caffeine and coffee, and the only thing that is getting us through this is that summer is in less than two weeks. So, as dead week approaches us, it can be easy to feel stressed and have multiple breakdowns a day as get closer and closer. Since this time can be filled with nothing but stress and mental/emotional breakdowns, I thought it might help to find some humor in a few thoughts that all of us have during dead week while we try not to fail all of our classes.

1. When you look at the study guide your professor put on Blackboard and realize that you're going to have to teach yourself entire chapters of material that your professor never went over but is including on the final:

2. When you start trying to read over that study guide but realize you're not even sure what class you're studying for:

3. When you look at everything you have to and think to yourself "How am I supposed to get everything done and study for every final before the end of the week?":

4. When you've been writing a paper all night and then look at your laptop and see that it's 4 a.m., you're out of coffee, have no food left, and now are out of reasons why you should keep writing your paper:

5. When you try to calculate what you need to get on your final to pass or get a certain grade for a class and have another mental breakdown:

6. When you look back at your syllabus and realize that your final is cumulative:

7. When you feel like you can't study anymore or write another word for your paper and decide that you need to take a little study break, but you end up watching half of a season of a new show on Netflix and hate yourself for it:

8. When your laptop dies halfway through the paper you're writing:

9. When you read the paper you wrote at 3 a.m. the next day and realize you made no sense at all:

10. When you finally get to sleep but realize you have to wake up and do the same thing tomorrow:

We're in this together, everyone

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
