As an RA, I love all of my residents. There are just a few things I'd like you to know...
1. I am your friend -- until you fail a room inspection.
I love hanging out with you and going on adventures and ordering fast food at 3 a.m. However, this is my job, and I am not going to overlook your mountain of dirty clothes and half-eaten pizzas.
2. Yes, you can cry on my shoulder.
I am always here for you and will listen to all your frustrations and hurts. Don’t worry about getting mascara on my shirt, because that will wash out. You can cry for three minutes or three hours; just let me help you.
3. Your music keeps me up at night, but I don’t mind.
This is sarcasm. I need sleep, too, so let’s turn it down a notch.
4. I am not your maid.
It is not my job to clean up your Goldfish trail down the hall or wash your clothes. I will gladly recommend cleaning supplies and laundry detergent, but will not demonstrate on your coffee cups.
5. When you need a ride home, call me.
I do not care what hour of the night it is; if you don’t know where you are or how you are going to make it home, call me. I sleep with my phone next to my pillow, and I will always answer without judgement.
6. Tape your keys to your body.
Although missing class can be fun, doing it to unlock your door can get a little aggravating.
7. No toasters!
Don’t burn my hall down. Just don’t.
8. I am always last.
If you do start a fire on my hall, know that I really love you, because I will be the last one out. I have to bang on every door to make sure you’re safe before I can take care of myself.
9. The lack of toilet paper annoys me, too.
When housekeeping doesn’t deliver toilet paper right on time, you aren’t the only one who feels the struggle. Trust me.
10. I love you even when I lock myself in my bathroom for a few hours.
Yes, being an RA is exhausting, but I would never trade it for the world. My residents are great and make me feel like a real-life superhero even when other parts of my life are crummy. All the stress and tears are worth it when I watch my residents succeed and accomplish amazing feats.
