Finally, it’s time for summer break. You stuck it out up at college for a whole year, and what is your sweet reward? Almost four whole months back home with your friends and family. There are some things that all college students know to be true about their summer break, and here are just a few.
1. Getting a not-so-warm welcome from your siblings.
This conversation is all too familiar:
“Hey.”
“Hey.”
“How was school?”
“Good.”
“Good.”
2. Unpacking the car of everything from your dorm room.
Packing the car up when you were leaving school seemed like a life-sized game of Tetris, but taking it all into your house is so much worse. There is no good place to store all of your things until school next year and you’ll probably spend the first month home living out of those boxes.
3. Cuddling with your pets until they’re about to pop.
They might have missed you and they might not have, but you surely missed them. At least once a day you wished you could pet your dog or cat, but you had to wait until break. Now break is here, so you have to cram those seven months of missed cuddling time into the four months of break.
4. Seeing your best friends.
It has been nearly three months since spring break, and you and your best friends haven't seen each other, so things are bound to get pretty loud. Hugging and screaming so loud you can’t hear what is being said out in public can be expected but, hey, you’re back with your best friends, so none of that matters.
5. Getting together with family.
Getting prepared to see all of your extended family for the first time since the holidays can be extremely tedious. Be prepared to answer the long line of questions, including but not limited to, "So, what are you going to do with your life? Do you have a boyfriend/girlfriend? Did you get a job?"
6. Applying for a summer job.
We all know the struggle of sending out dozens of resumes to try and get any job, whether it be an internship at a law firm or a cashier at McDonald’s. Money is money. But the real issue arises when they respond saying, “We don’t hire for just the summer.”
7. Making plans with friends you haven’t spoken to since high school.
It’s pretty typical for kids to change and make new friends at college. It just stinks when they forget about the kids they had been friends with since middle school. Making plans with these friends are a giant game of catch-up. Attempting to sum up each other on everything that happened that year can be tough.
8. Restaurants and take-out galore.
Taco Night in the dining hall can’t compete with your favorite little Mexican restaurant back home. For at least the first week home, your meals will consist of Panera, Chipotle, Moe’s, pretty much anything they don’t have up at school, and all your hometown’s best restaurants.
9. Sleeping.
Coming straight out of finals week, where you probably got three hours of sleep on a good night, the sweet responsibility-free life that is summer will keep you up until 3 a.m., but in bed until 2 p.m. Not to mention your bed at home trumps your dorm room bed any day.
