A year ago, I injured me kneecap, yes, it sounds ridiculous and no I don't know just how I did it. Long story short, I've been hobbling around with this injury, no longer able to do the things I really love to do. Running, jogging, completing 5ks, walking up a flight of stairs without my knee hurting are all things I took for granted when I could actually do these things. However, if there's anything I've learned this year, it's what not to say to someone with an injury. So, here we go.
When I had x injury, I needed surgery.
No, knowing that you had the same injury as me and needed to have surgery does not make me feel any better. But thanks for trying.
Just rest it up.
Yes, rest...because this brace, ice, heat, and medication just aren't doing the trick.
You should really go see Dr. X....
As much as your doctor's suggestion is supposed to be helpful, it isn't. I clearly already saw a doctor and don't need to see another one.
You know, when you're older, you're going to get hurt a lot easier.
Thank you for reminding me that time does not turn backwards and at some point, I will be old. Not that I don't already feel like I'm 90...
How did you hurt your x? *Says answer* how is that even possible?
I have no idea. Bad things just happen to good people, I guess.
Are you sure you can do that?
Of the very limited things I can do, yes, this is the one thing I can do.
It looks like it hurts.
Well yeah, it feels about how it looks.
How will this affect your career choice? *Disclaimer, this is probably only annoying if you're aware that you need to be in a certain physical condition in order to pursue your career choice.
Well, I didn't think of that...I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THIS MEANS FOR THE CAREER I DON'T EVEN HAVE YET!
You must have a lot of extra time on your hands.
No, I don't. Injured doesn't mean I get a free pass from life. I still have bills to pay and more importantly, food to buy. So no. I don't have extra free time.
And last, but the most annoying...
So, when will you be all better?
That's a wonderful and tragic question. Wonderful: because I ask myself that every single day I have pain and tragic: because I've been told this probably won't ever fully heal.
So, if you're like me and are an injured person, this one's for you. And if you're fortunate enough to not be reading this with a sprained or broken something, good for you. Here are some tips on what not to say to those around you who are less lucky.
