Whether you were born in Italy, or your parents or grandparents, here are 10 things only true Italians understand.
1. Pasta (almost) every night with dinner.
Whether it was penne, rigatoni, or ditalini, Mom was always whipping up some pasta that you would eat to start your meal every night.
2. When your parents came home, it was mandatory you greeted them with a kiss.
Not just parents but pretty much any family member, if you didn't say hello or give a kiss, it not only reflected who you were as a person but also your parents.
3. You have been chased with a wooden spoon or belt at least 100 times when you were a kid.
4. Christmas Eve is by far the biggest holiday of the year.
Christmas Eve usually consists of you spending time with your huge, oversized family, eating 6 hours worth of food, with the best part being the fish. Oh and at some point of the night your uncles are passing out Grappa and Sambuca like they are candy. And of course there is the annual family picture.
5. Dinner is at a set time every night. If you are not home for dinner...
...so be it, what are the leftovers? I personally did not have a microwave in my house until I was 12.
6. Nobody can cook like Grandma.
Nobody.
7. You legitimately get angry when non-Italians butcher Italian food or names.
It is not RICK-OTTA or MOTZ-ARELL-A.
8. Your family idolizes Padre Pio.
He's hanging in your house somewhere or you have his picture on a gold chain.
9. The World Cup is the best two months of summer.
Because no soccer team compares to Italian soccer--and we take it VERY seriously.
