10 Things You Did Not Know About Band Kids

So as the summer is coming to an end, the greatest part of the school year is approaching, BAND CAMP! However, contrary to popular belief band camp is not like how they portray it in "American Pie," well it is like that a little bit, but not completely. So here is a list of 10 things that you would not know about band kids.

1. Band kids party.

This might not be the case in some high schools, but in college it is. Band kids in college are just like any other college student. We party and we have fun. Actually it was because of band that I actually started to party, which is how i met most of the people I am friends with in college.

2. Band kids go Greek.

This might shock some people, but there are quite a few band kids who go greek and stay involved. Actually there are Greek Life organizations that are focused around music. There is a drum major for my marching band is actually the president of Delta Chi at my school.

3. Some of the band kids are hot.

We are not all stumpy band geeks covered in acne, at least not anymore. We grow up just like anyone else and we become attractive. So next time you see an attractive person, just think they might be in band.

4. We are sexually active.

I know people joke about the "sexually active band geeks" (thank you "Mean Girls"), but it is true. We are college students, and we are just as curious about sex as anybody else. Sorry to make this uncomfortable.

5. Not all of us study music.

There is a wide variety of majors that can be in the marching band. For example I study English and my first marching band friend is a theatre major. We also have poly-sci and business majors, so do not assume that we all practice everyday for our concerts.

6. We listen to popular music.

So while there is nothing wrong with listening to classical music, I personally love jamming to Iggy Azalea. I mean I-G-G-Y is a Queen, and Bach is just not my style. Plus they are not going to be playing the "1812 Overture" at a party, but Fetty Wap might make an appearance.

7. We are natural leaders.

This might be a little surprising but because of all of the chances for band kids to take charge, we have to become natural leaders. This is why we make good fraternity/sorority presidents or executive board members. Since we have to run sectionals or even band practices, we are good leaders naturally.

8. We are not all smart.

This is going to seem a little mean, but seriously some band kids are dumb. However there are some people who are extremely smart when it comes to school, but they lack common sense. Seriously, some band kids will run down a dark alley and not think twice.

9. We might hate each other, but we are a family.

There will always be drama when you put 70-plus people in an organization and expect them to see each other everyday. There are days when I will gladly shove my trombone down someone's throat, but deep down I still love the kid. That being said, do not mess with a band kid, there will be 20 more looking for blood.

10. Band kids are awesome.

So as this article comes to an end, people need to start realizing that band kids are probably some of the coolest people you will meet, These kids that I have met in my eight years of marching band will be the people standing up in my wedding. As I approach my last year in a marching band I cannot help but remember the good times and smile, but still be deeply sadden that all this fun will end.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
