As I have learned in Econ 1 recently, time is a scarce resource. (Thanks Martha!) But that means I only have two nights a week without classes the next day. 8AMs e'eryday! *woot woot*
But as an early riser by necessity, not habit, I have come to appreciate free nights, with no obligation to turn in an essay by midnight, no meetings that turn into dinners, and no readings to do. Or not readings I NEED to do immediately.
So here are some of the things I like to do, some suggestions and some personal future plans, on Saturday nights. And none of them are Late Night at Crossroads. #BringLateNiteBackToSat
1. Watch an old Disney movie
While the second movie is my favorite, when I watched all three of the movies last Saturday night, I realized how empowering the song Cinderella was and still is.
2. Plan gifts for Christmas
Maybe it's just me, but once it's October, I'm ready for the holidays! I can't wait to dress up for Halloween, to eat mashed potatoes for dayssss after Thanksgiving, and to exchange gifts with my loved ones for Christmas. And part of it is planning thoughtful gifts for all my friends and family, and by starting early, I don't have to rush around Black Friday style.
3. Watch Saturday Night Live
"I can see Alaska from my house!" The election season creates the best materials for comedy and late night shows, but the most iconic moments may have been from the 2004 SNL season. And once again in 2016, the cold opens inspired by our most interesting candidates give. me. life.
4. Compare two boba shops
There are two kinds of people: those who like boba and those who don't. If you fall into the first group, grab some friends who feel the same and hit up two different shops. Buy the same drink. Compare the tea and the boba. It's fun, and I recommend this method and not buying two drinks for yourself. Out of personal experience, I can 10/10, not recommend. However, if you don't like boba, you can still enjoy the tea, slushies, and other drinks available.
5. Watch and recreate a makeup tutorial
If you're anything like me, you might have a sizable makeup collection and a friend who does as well. In this case, find the most colorful makeup tutorial on YouTube, grab your friend, and recreate the look. Final step is to go out or go to bed, depends on you. Just make sure to have fun with it (and wash your face)!
6. Grab food with a friend
While usually food is the most important part of any aspect of my life, this time, I want to focus on the friend. I am lucky enough to have classes with my best friend, but that means most of our time together is class or homework or studying for midterms. I like just having time to sit down, eat, and talk. Not about school. About anything else. How are her personal relationships with other friends going to her favorite shows and clothes to anything she might want for a gift (because you know, I'm already planning).
7. Do some reading
No, not class readings. We know those are saved for Sunday nights exclusively. I mean, read a book. Just a chapter before you go to bed. Nonfiction, scifi, or young adult female-led dystopian novel. There are so many books out there waiting to be read, and something about reading a physical book is just so soothing.
8. Call your family
Sometimes at school, you get busy. I know I do. Sometimes, I forget to call my parents. But when I do, I know I feel really content to talk to my family again, and my parents really appreciate when I take time out of my day for them.
9. Go to a football game
I might be a little partial, but I love going to Cal football games. A lot of our games are evening games this year, so it's a great way to spend your Saturday night. If you're a first year, you can rally up your whole hallway to go to the game together (take advantage of that free season pass!) and grab some dinner afterwards.
So maybe next Saturday night if you don't know what to do (or don't want to wake up the next day not feeling too well), then try something from this list. Or let me know what other things you like to do.
