10 Things We Take Advantage of While at Home From College

Sometimes it's easy to forget how well we have it at home.

Since I've been home for break, I've realized I seriously take advantage of everything home has to offer. College is great; I love the people, the experiences, and even the quiet studying in the library (sometimes). Coming home, though, I realize there's so many things that I don't even realize I miss until I'm back.

1. Fooood

Okay, maybe I do always miss this when I'm gone, but it deserves a shout-out. Homemade meals are so so good. The meat is never mysterious and the noodles are always the perfect texture. Mama knows BEST.

2. Sleeping in my own, not twin-sized, bed

There's so much space to stretch out in my bed at home. Also, I don't have to worry about falling off my lofted bed that's over 6 feet off the ground, so that's a plus.

3. Showering without shower shoes (PTL)

Actually..showers at home in general are so much better. You can take as long as you want. You don't even have to worry about people seeing you through the crack between the shower stall and the curtain!

4. Endless alone time

Being at college, there's no such thing as alone time. Even if you're in your dorm, the walls are paper thin. There's no way to relax on your own when you can hear everything from the next three rooms over.

5. Ample time for Netflix

…and not having to wear headphones to listen to it. I can whatever I want, when I want, and that is such a blessing.

6. Hometown best friends

Oh, how much I missed the group of friends that have been by my side for years. It's so great being home and being able to go out to your favorite restaurants together, or just lounging around in pajamas while watching movies.

7. My pets

I always forget how sweet they are and how warm and nice their cuddles are. They always welcome me by jumping on me and giving me tons of kisses, and I would't have it any other way.

8. Eating fruit and vegetables

Literally why does Burwell only have cantaloupe and honeydew??? When I'm home I get strawberries, blueberries, grapes, raspberries, and more. There's so much variety that I always tale advantage of while I'm home.

9. My sister's closet

My clothes aren't enough for me, and when I'm home I have two closets instead of one. Plus, I'm pretty sure she has all the cute clothes anyways, since I only took t-shirts, leggings and Nike shorts to college with me.

10. Not having to do my own laundry

Do I even need to elaborate?? Moms just know what they're doing when it comes to laundry. My clothes always come out smelling better, feeling softer, and wrinkle-free!

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
