Things I Didn't Appreciate Enough At Home Before Moving To UA

Sure, jamming to "Dixieland Delight" at any given hour of the night is great, but sometimes you just miss home.

I’ve been at UA for three and a half months now, and although I am so in love with the university, sometimes I just wish I would have embraced what I had at home during high school a little more. These are just a few things that I didn’t appreciate enough at home before moving here:

1. Having to walk five minutes just to get to your car to go somewhere.

But really. Sometimes maybe even ten minutes if you forget where you’re parked. I’d rather just sit in my dorm and never leave than have to walk all the way across the street to get my car.

2. Having to go upstairs to do your laundry. AND THEN PAYING FOR IT.

Should I take the stairs or the elevator???? Elevator, duh. And you would think for $25,000 a year I could at least do laundry for free, not $3 a load. Mom, dad, put some money on my act card PLEASE. (That is if you even manage to do your laundry).

3. Then finding an open washer and dryer might as well be a test of survival of the fittest.

For the love of God, JUST GET YOUR CLOTHES OUT WHEN THEY’RE DONE.

4. Home cooked meals!!!!

“Wanna go to lakeside for dinner?” Do I want to walk ten minutes to go eat dining hall food? NO. Can't we just find something here in the dorm? Oh... wait.. THERE IS NOTHING.

5. High School - where classes are easy and you don’t have to walk twenty-five minutes to class in 108 degree weather or the pouring rain.

Seriously though, high school is a breeze compared to college. Also, appreciate the air conditioned hallways with ceilings that you get to walk from class to class in (in under five minutes).

6. Having your own bedroom.

Yeah, even though I live in Pres and have my own bedroom, the place, much like UA in general, is party-central. Monday night? Better believe the people above you are going to be dancing around upstairs and the people down the hall will be blaring “Dixieland Delight” (but hey, that’s okay even if I do have an 8 a.m. and it’s two in the morning. If Dixieland Delight is on, you just embrace it).

7. But really, HOME COOKED MEALS.

Lakeside, I am tired of salads and pizza and honestly Chick-fil-a gets old after a while. Someone, please just send me some lasagna or something.

8. Having my family around.

Okay college is rough and some days you just feel like crying and you want to hug your parents and hear that it’s going to all be okay. But wait, they’re hours away and you probably won’t see them for a few more weeks. Oh well. Better suck it up, buttercup.

9. Having your pets just a whistle away.

Animal therapy is a very real thing, and after a long hard day I just want to cuddle with our family dog. Too bad he’s a couple of hours away too. Guess I will just have to look at cute puppy videos online.

10. Seeing familiar faces.

Back at home, I couldn’t leave my house without seeing someone I know. Here, I never see the same person twice. Do half of y’all even go here???

11. My home town southern baptist church.

Yeah, yeah Highlands your church is great and all, but I miss my congregation of fifty and the old hymn books (and hat day the first Sunday of each month).

12. Having guidance/someone making me go to class.

Okay, yeah having your freedom is great and all but sometimes I just need someone to tell me to get my butt out of bed and go to class. Parents, where you at when I need you???

13. Getting accepted and being able to look forward to attending here.

I thought UA was just an average university and it wasn’t going to be anything special. Boy, was I wrong. Although sometimes you have to settle on Lakeside for dinner, pay to do your laundry, and listen to our school’s theme song blaring at two in the morning, it’s worth it. The atmosphere is worth it. The beauty of the campus is worth it. The challenging classes are worth it. The smiling faces of strangers and hearing “Roll Tide” at least ten times a day is worth it. UA is my home away from home, and I love it.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
