I'm not saying don't study for finals. However, I am saying that they get old really quickly. Especially if you go to a college like mine where you're on the quarter system instead of semesters. When you have to do a semester's work in ten weeks you often find yourself wanting to pack your bags and get the hell out of town to live a life of solitude in the Canadian wilderness.
Here are some things that I often do to get through finals week, to give myself the motivation to keep moving forward in these trying times.
1. Go On A Donut Run
I suppose you can substitute something else for donuts, but fresh donuts and coffee from Sweetwaters at midnight when you're supposed to be revising that final draft of your research paper taste really good.
2. Watch Videos of Gayle Waters-Waters
Comedy is the ultimate de-stressor. How about a middle-aged suburban mother who dubs herself "king of the cul-de-sac" and keeps a chest of cous-cous guarded by a pig in her basement? Here's the first episode.
3. Indulge In Vine Compliations
If you have a decent amount of self-control, try doing 30 minute intervals of studying followed up by a good 5-10 minute Vine compilation. Maybe you don't have any willpower and that 5-10 minute window turns into an hour or two of Vine induced joy. I'm not judging you.
4. Listen To Ed Sheeran's New Album
Because it's incredible. You might get a little emotional. It's fine, it's finals week let it happen.
5. Make An Appointment With The Counseling Center
Go talk to a counselor at your school if you feel like your mental health is falling apart or if you have something else going on that you don't know how you're going to juggle alongside the impending doom of finals. This is especially helpful because it's likely that your peers are going through similar situations and don't have the mental strength to help you as well as a mental health professional will.
6. Order That Pizza With Extra Cheese That You've Been Holding Back
You've been so close to calling in that delivery order every Friday night now for the past ten weeks. Order it now. You need that greasy ray of sunshine.
7. Go Swimming
Hit the school's pool and go to town. It's refreshing to focus on making it from one end of the pool to the next and that's it. Counting laps and focusing on breathing takes your mind off of studying for that chemistry exam that you need to get an A on.
8. Play Some Nostalgic Video Games
Get some good Nintendo 64 action with a few hours of Banjo Kazooie or Mario Party. Or, pull out your Nintendo DS and feed the Nintendogs you've been starving since middle school.
9. Organize Your Desk Drawers
This is one of my favorites because cleaning and organizing is one of my coping mechanism for stress. The best part is that you feel like you're doing something productive despite the fact that you're procrastinating that outline for your English Literature paper.
10. Enjoy The Strangest That Netflix Has To Offer
I guarantee you that you've never heard of the show Steampunk'd, and to be honest it's not a great show, but the intensity of the drama is THRILLING. Or, satisfy your need for weird with an obscure conspiracy theory documentary. That usually does the trick.
