The average woman spends $1,351 in extra costs and fees each year. News of the so-called "Pink tax" has gained lots of attention recently. There's even talk of a new legislative bill that is trying to reduce this tax! However, there are some who don't believe there is such a thing. That's why I found 10 common things that cost more for women.
1. Vehicle Repair
This depends on how uninformed the person is. According to a recent article women were quoted for $406 for a repair job that should have only cost $365. However, men who acted similarly uninformed were only quoted $383. This charge, unfortunately, has to do with both sexes and being informed is the best way to combat being charged extra.
2. Razors
There is nearly a $3.50 difference between men and women’s razors shown below!
3. Sanitary Products
According to The Guardian, women spend over $3,000 over the course of our lives on pads and tampons. In the article, the author addressed why these things are taxed as sanitary products are vital for the health and well-being for women.
4. Deodorant
A 2-Pack of Degree Deodorant has over a $3 difference between men and women’s. With deodorant aimed for women costing $7.39 while the men’s costs $3.99.
5. Lotion
Even Gold Bond Lotion has failed us. A bottle of woman’s lotion costs $10.99 and a man’s lotion $9.99.
6. Shaving Cream
Gillette Shaving Cream has a $.20 difference. Whereas a Target brand has a $.45 difference.
7. Face Wash
Neutrogena's face wash is initially gender-neutral but if it is marketed specifically for men it costs nearly $2 less than the face wash that is in the women's section.
8. Clothing
This is the old standby, men’s clothes are cheaper than women’s. Take the time and browse the men’s section at the clothing store and you will see the difference. Old Navy, in fact, was caught charging more for plus sized clothing for women, but not for men. With more than $13 difference; Gap, who owns Old Navy, released a statement basically stating that plus-sizes caused more because the “team of designers has specifically designed those pants to be trendy and curve-enhancing”.
9. Intimates
To buy a good bra can cost up to $100 depending on where you buy and how big your cup size is. Finding the right fit can be hard enough but having a larger cup size will, usually, make the price go up higher. Whereas men will usually just have to choose between the various types of boxers or briefs that are available to them.
10. Swimming Suits
This is the same complaint as the intimates section above. Men have only one piece of clothing to buy whereas a woman has two and so their mark up can obviously be expected. However, when a man's brief made by Speedo costs $32 and a woman's bottoms costs $2 more plus extra the $17 for the top, it is hard not to feel slightly upset by the difference.
