Being the oldest sibling is a great thing. You're the first one to grace your family and you set the standard. However, being the oldest sibling also means that you're constantly looked at and looked up to. Here are 10 things that describe being the oldest sibling.
1. You immediately lose your title as "the baby."
The first couple years it was just you. You were the apple of your parents eyes’, the ultimate child. However, the moment that second child arrived, you were treated like you were ready to move out and get your own job.
2. You are the test run.
Clothes, boys, girls, jobs, driving, drinking...the list goes on and on. No matter what it is, your parents are unintentionally using you as their test run for many big things in your life.
3. The rules were always a little bit stricter for you.
Just as you are new to the world, your parents are new to being, well, parents. So rules about parties, school, and everything in between tend to be a bit stricter when it comes to you.
4. Every achievement, big or small, is celebrated.
Graduation to having your first date - it's celebrated. Which, if it equals cake and a card, can't be that bad?
5. You're a built in babysitter.
If you can walk, talk, put spaghetti in a pot and can call your parents - congrats, you're a babysitter. I recommend making plans weeks in advance because you never know when your parents will need someone to watch those pesky younger siblings.
6. You are the example…even if that’s a bad thing.
You passed the test or you failed the test - you are the example of why that's good or bad. Even things you did as a child can be brought back to haunt you years later when your parents are teaching your younger siblings lessons.
7. You definitely don't remember having an iPhone at 10 years old.
This needs no explanation. It's just simply unfair.
8. The phrase “hand-me-down” doesn’t exist.
Never once have I been handed a pair of jeans by an older sibling with a smug face. No, if anything, I'm the one handing down the jeans.
9. You are expected to be a guide in your younger siblings’ lives.
When a younger sibling comes to you, you're expected to know the answers. And most times, you don't. Though, you usually know what to say when the question is "how do I get out of chores?"
10. And most importantly, you’re grateful to have people in your lives who might drive you crazy, but will always be on your side.
Thanks for being the annoying little boys who will always be my best friends.
