A best friend is that person you could turn to for anything. Whether a boy just dumped you and she is there to make you feel better, or you just need a second opinion on what to wear. A best friend is there for you through it all. You can be friends for only a few days to a couple of years, as long as they are that person you can trust and rely on, the person that makes you a better person. Here are just some of the many things to thank your best friend for.
1. For laughing with you.
A joke just isn't as funny when you don't have someone to laugh alongside you. From the inside jokes to your favorite comedy, a best friend knows you practically better than you know yourself. They know what makes you laugh, what makes you cry, and what makes you happiest.
2. For crying with you.
When you are going through something hard like a breakup, a loss in family, or even just a bad grade, it is nice to have a friend that, regardless of the situation, sees you are in trouble and will stop whatever they are doing to help you feel better. I would be lost without the friends I have today, and the hard times would be so much harder without them by my side.
3. For being able to put your trust in them.
With today's society, it is sometimes hard to give someone your full trust. You think they might have a hidden agenda, don't really care that much about your feeling, are more there for the gossip, or some other circumstance. A best friend is the girl you could tell anything to, whether it's a weird rash you have or a secret from your past that you are too scared to let anyone else know. They are the person you trust more than anyone, and you know they would not do anything to hurt you.
4. For loving you.
A best friend is there for the good and bad. They don't just show up for when you're in a good mood—they are there for all of it. They love you regardless of your flaws, imperfections insecurities, etc. They see all of these things you hate about yourself as perfections. They love you for who you are and as you are.
5. For being your unbiological sister.
Sure, you may not be related by blood, but that is about the only difference between you and your best friend. You guys are like sisters. You argue, you fight, but at the end of the day you know they are there for you regardless. They love you unconditionally, and they know that the bad times are worth all the good.
6. For giving you advice.
A best friend always gives you advice, even if you don't always listen to it. There has been time and time again my best friend gave me advice, and I knew it was the right thing to do, but did I listen? No. I'm stubborn and only want to listen to my own advice even if I know it is wrong. A best friend knows this—they know everything about you—but they still offer you this advice because they know eventually you might just start listening.
7. For sticking up for you.
People get made fun of, unfortunately that is just a fact of life. Nobody is perfect, and you cannot make everyone like you. But if a girl were to say something mean about you in front of your best friend, you know she will be right there, ready to put that girl in her place. A best friend friend will not let people walk all over your, make fun of you, or start rumors about you. She's the person that will stick up for you no matter what. After all, only she is allowed to make fun of you right?
8. For being honest with you.
A best friend is going to tell you, "Yeah, that dress kind of does make you look fat." It's not her trying to diss you, make fun of you, or call you ugly. She is looking out for you. She's the person that will say, "Here, try this on. I think it'll look much better." And you know what? She'll be right. Honesty is the best policy, and even if it hurts, you know she only wants the best for you.
9. For meeting halfway.
No friendship, relationship, etc. is perfect. It is all about compromise. You are not going to agree on everything, that's just how life is. But you can reach a common ground. A best friend realizes that. And you guys sometimes have to work together to reach that level. I'm one of the most stubborn people you will ever meet, but sometimes I have to learn to let go and just let things be. I'm lucky my best friend sees how stubborn I can be and still loves me anyway.
10. For being loyal.
Your best friend does not have to be your best friend. She has the ability to walk out on you anytime she wants. But she doesn't. Why? Because she loves you. She sees when you are going through a rough time, and sometimes that means you say things you do not mean. A best friend knows that. She sees that you may have had troubles and taken them out on her. You make comments you do not mean or say something rude because she is the only one you can take things out upon. But she loves you. She knows that is not who you are. Everyone makes mistakes, everyone has flaws, everyone screws up. But would you really give up all the good times because of some of the bad?
I have had the honor of knowing my best friend for the last 12 years. I would be incredibly lost without her, and I am thankful for her every day.
