Despite your moody attitudes and emotional ups and downs, your college best friends are, singlehandedly, some of the most important people you have throughout your four years at school. These are the people who watch you transition from a sassy teenager into a successful adult. The love and support they have shown you usually goes unnoticed, so here are just a few things you should thank your college best friends for to remind them just how much they mean to you.
To my college best friends -- thank you for…
Letting me rant about how much I miss my family. Your best friends from college probably don't know your parents, but once they finally meet them they will feel like they've known them for years. They let you talk and talk and talk about how much you miss sitting on your front steps with your dog (who to you is just the cutest thing ever) or how much you miss the jokes your little brother would make at the dinner table.
Even though anyone else would tell you to shut up because they could care less about the garden you and your mom planted together or the skiing trips you take with your dad, they always sit and listen. More importantly, they remember everything you tell them. They know it matters to you and they know it makes you happy, so they will always listen.
Taking me home when I need to go home. Friends will let you walk home alone, but a best friend would never miss out on the opportunity to get some funny videos as the two of you stumble home together. They will also keep a hidden stash of all your embarrassing pics and vids because “it will be so funny to show at your wedding when I'm your maid of honor!" Oh, no, please no.
Whether you've had a little too much tequila, or the guy you like is flirting with some other girl, she's the first one to volunteer to go home with you. And of course she will tell you “You're way prettier than her anyways!"
Letting me act as weird and crazy as I did in high school, and loving me regardless. We've all been there -- the awkward high school years. Unfortunately, some of us don't always grow out of them (or maybe that's just me). If you are lucky enough, you'll find someone who is compatible with your weirdness and you get to call them your best friend. There is nothing I love more than dancing on the table with my best friend at a party. For the record, we don't do this to get attention or act cute. We do it because we either really love the song ("Talking Body," obviously) or we really want to people watch. Unlimited laughs, believe me.
Teaching me that making a mistake is okay. She will let you rant and cry about whatever it is you think is the worst thing that ever happened in your life, but she will also be the first one to offer you her hand to pick you up. You no longer have your mom to tell you that life will get better, so your best friend does the best she can to make sure you know you didn't mess up that bad -- or if you did, she treats it as her mistake and will stick by your side until it's over.
Your best friends will never let you go through anything alone, and even though you may be thousands of miles away from your family, they will make you feel right at home.
