Being the daughter of a teacher definitely has its ups and downs. If you are the child of an educator, you've undoubtedly shared these experiences.
1. We have to do well in the subject our parent teaches.
2. Teacher kids get really excited about school supplies.
The start of a new school year means restocking the classroom supplies--seriously it's like Christmas for us.
3. School is never out for summer, many a days have I spent in my mothers classroom during summer vacation.
4. Teacher kids are the equivalent of two men and a truck at the beginning and end of a school year.
I swear my mom had kids just so they could pack up her classroom every year, these skills definitely helped when it came to move into the dorms.
5. No alone-time.
Teachers have most of the same breaks as students, including summer vacation. This means road-trips galore, so much time spent with each other can be both a blessing and a curse.
6. Stealing classroom materials.
My mother constantly purchased books, often on a bi-weekly basis. I didn't think she would mind if I took a book here or there, until I had accumulated a couple hundred books in my room. (That is not an exaggeration.)
7. Report cards gave me serious anxiety.
"You got a C?! Alright, you're grounded for a month."
8. There is no way you can go in public without a former student spotting your parent.
It is funny to see how surprised students are to see their teacher in public, believe it or not teachers actually go grocery shopping on the weekend.
9. A large part of my allowance came from grading papers.
10. I have always been called mini-me by coworkers of my mothers, in reality, they probably don't even know my real name.
11. Most people expect us to follow in our parents footsteps and become teachers as well, that is not always the case.
I love having a teacher for a mom, I learned that being a teacher takes a special kind of person.
Now the the time has come where I'll just sit back and wait for the text from my mom about subject/verb agreements.
