10 Things To Do When Stuck At Home For Break

Spring Break is finally here for most colleges but not all of us are lucky enough to leave the state or even our hometown.

Spring break in college has the stereotype of going to parties on the beach, but not all of us can afford to do those things so we're stuck at home. For those of us who are stuck at home for break, here are some ideas to still have fun while off of school.

1. Have a Game Night with friends

There's nothing more fun than getting together with friends and playing a whole bunch of classic and newer games. Play any game ranging from hilarious card games like Cards Against Humanity, to strategy board games like Clue. Add some snacks, some drinks, a little music, laughter and memories, and your night is complete. Bonus points if everyone comes in pjs or sweats.

2. Spend all day watching Netflix

Set aside one day to binge at that show you love without feeling guilty about avoiding your homework. You deserve at least one day to be lazy and relax in your pjs all day without being judged. It's called break for a reason. Just remember to take bathroom and snack breaks.

3. Work

Now this may not be the most fun thing ever, but getting that little extra bit of money always helps. Even if it's just for a day or two, the money you'll make will help you have money for when you go back.

4. Spend a day with your family

Do something simple like just staying home and talking with your parents or go visit a local museum. Treat your younger siblings (if you have any) to some ice cream. Watch a movie together and keep your phone upstairs. Your family probably hasn't seen you in several weeks so make sure they actually see you while you're home.

5. Get coffee with a friend you haven't seen in a long time

Meet up with a friend who goes to a different school or who has conflicting schedules at a coffee shop to catch up. Depending on how long it's been since you last saw them, you'll have hours of stories to tell each other. Also getting coffee is always a plus.

6. Volunteer somewhere

Why not do some good with your free time and volunteer for your community? Help serve at your local food pantry and help out the poor. Help out at the Human Society and care for all of the animals there. Or simply help out at the public library to help relieve a little stress from the workers.

7. Go to the park

If it's nice enough where you live, or it's a nice day, take a trip to the park. You can either go by yourself or bring a friend or more. Take bike ride or walk around the park and if there is a trail that goes through it, take advantage of that. Go the lighthouse near sunset and take some pictures. Or just be a kid again and play on the swings.

8. Read a book

Now this isn't exactly a one day thing (unless you really want to do that, I'm not stopping you) but it's still something to do with your free time. Take this week off to finally read that book you've been meaning to read but never got the time to start. Read a little bit every day or binge read the entire book in one day with some hot chocolate or coffee by your side.

9. Do something crafty

This is something perfect for any of the days where it's rainy and you don't even want to leave your house. Look up on Pinterest some simple and fun crafts to add a little more spice to your room, house or apartment. Renew any of your old clothes into something that you would wear again. Or attempt to do some crafts, fail, and end up binge watching your favorite YouTube channel. Either way at least you attempted to be creative and productive.

10. Be spontaneous

This last thing isn't a solid idea but a piece of advice. Sometimes the best plans and memories are spontaneous. Drive to the nearest big city and spend the day there. Go on a shopping spree. Go to a trampoline park. Go to an escape room. Whatever it is, just find some good friends, don't think and just go.

Have fun and don't let the fact that you're at home for break ruin your Spring break.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
