Working in retail is both a blessing and a curse. While you gain impeccable customer service skills and the ability to be very patient and kind (even when you want to scream), you also deal with some of the most annoying things while on the job. As a retail employee, you know exactly how to act when you go to shop in a store. Some people, however, do not have the same etiquette, and their lack of awareness and decency can be quite daunting at times. The next time you go shopping, here are 10 things all retail employees want you to keep in mind:
1. I am not your servant/personal shopper.
Yes, I am here to help you find what you need and sell to you, but if you snap at me and act as if you own me, I will not be as willing to help you. Also, I can't walk around the entire store with you and hold your bags—you realize you're not the only customer, right? Please be mindful of the fact that we juggle many customers at a time.
2. It's not my fault—it's store policy.
People seem to think that we want to say no to them, as if we have some personal vendetta against them. I'm not denying your return because I hate you. I'm denying your return because it's store policy, and you yelling at me like it's my fault won't change that.
3. We have to ask you if you need help.
It's literally our job to make sure you're finding everything okay and to offer help several times during your shopping experience, especially if you're "just browsing." We hate bothering you, but just humor us and tell us you're doing fine and usually we'll leave you alone...unless our boss gives us the evil eye.
4. The store is hard to keep clean—please don't destroy the shirts I just folded.
You know how you think to yourself, "wow, everything looks so perfect," every time you walk into a store? Yeah, that's because we just finished folding everything and now you're about to fling clothes everywhere looking for your size, even when we offer to help you find it. Here's a tip: just let us find it for you. We know exactly where it is and we know how to make it perfect again.
5. When a price tag is missing, it doesn't mean the item is free.
If we got a dollar for every time a customer made a comment about the item being free because of a missing price tag, we would all be rich.
6. Leave non-shoppers outside (or at home).
The boyfriend you just dragged into Victoria's Secret with you does not want to be there, and it's written all over his face. He doesn't care if you pick cheeky or thong underwear, he just wants to leave. And we'd rather not hear you two fight about the fact that he's miserable in the store, either.
7. Don't ask all of us the same question.
If you ask one associate about a product and they say we don't have it, don't continue asking other associates the same question. The product didn't magically appear in the backroom in the last 15 seconds.
8. Don't disrupt others' shopping experiences.
I've seen everything from rowdy groups of teenagers (who never buy anything) coming in and taking selfies in the mirrors to people bumping into someone they know and standing in the middle of the store having an hour-long conversation while being in everyone's way. It not only makes our job more difficult, but also it annoys the other customers.
9. We're sorry if we mention the store credit card a million times.
At most retail locations that have a store credit or rewards card, employees are instructed to ask the customer if they want to apply several times before they accept the 'no' answer. Trust me, we hate it as much as you do, but just let us do our job.
10. We actually do like helping you.
At the end of the day, we chose retail over other industries for a reason—we like to help people. We like to help you find the perfect outfit for that special occasion or the perfect gift for your significant other. We feel a sense of accomplishment when we make your shopping experience a pleasurable one, and we love it when you thank us. A really kind and patient customer is a retail worker's dream.
