I have heard many times people complaining that there is not much to do in Oswego. In the summer once most students have gone home; there's always some stragglers choosing to spend the summer in Oswego. Maybe it's the fact that we're here almost year round or that we rely on school friends or activities to keep us preoccupied but the town is pretty remarkable once you explore it. Here's a list of ten things (in no particular order) you can try this summer that won't make you blow through all your summer wages.
1. Kayaking
You can rent a kayak from Wright's Landing Marina for eight dollars an hour. Not only is it an awesome work out but you can paddle out to the lighthouse or take a moment to admire the city from afar.
2. The Harbor West Peirhead Light
For those of you who don't know, that is the official name of the lighthouse many of us have seen from shore. But there is a path that will lead you to the beginning of the break wall so that you can walk out towards the lighthouse. Although, it is a little tattered, I would recommend to wear good shoes and proceed with caution. It's not an impossible walk and another good workout.
3. Flat Rocks
Located right next to campus is a large collection of flat rocks people can barbecue or lay out to take sun. The edge of the rocks meet with Lake Ontario, so you can also go for a nice swim.
4. Midway Drive In
In the summer, the city of Oswego welcomes its residence to catch a movie from the comfort of their car at the drive in theater. Not only is it a treat to even have such a theater; admission is just eight dollars in cash. The drive in features two movies a night with some exceptions. Friday- Sunday are triple feature nights and for those that like captions (I know I do!) Sunday nights features closed captions whenever available.
5. Walking Trails
Oswego has plenty of walking trails offering beautiful views of the city. The following website has more information on terrain and distances for each one. It also contains information regarding the city's bike trails.
6. Parks
Oswego has many parks but the two I've really come to enjoy are Breitbeck Park and the Franklin Square Park. Breitbeck is huge featuring a playground and athletic courts. It also has an area for cookouts maybe a smore's night. The Franklin Sqaure features a unique wooden playground tall enough for anyone aged 3 and up could enjoy, as well as, a sprinkler park.
7. Lighthouse Lanes
The bowling alley offers many specials and games with shoe rentals are still under ten dollars a person. Friday and Saturday nights are cosmic bowling featuring disco and black lights.
8. Fort Ontario
This historic fort has a lot of relics to be enjoyed. Also, there are plenty of guided tours. This upcoming weekend the fort will even have fireworks to help celebrate Harborfest. Admission is just four dollars.
9. Volunteer Work
If you're bored and maybe looking for something a little more time consuming or on a regular basis. Try volunteering! The Oswego animal shelter takes volunteers to play with the cats and walk the dogs. There's also a YMCA in town!
10. Lee Hall
The SUNY Oswego campus keeps the gym and pool located in Lee Hall open through the summer.
These are only some of the activities Oswego has to offer. If you live long enough in any city it's going to seem repetitive and boring. Try having more of an open mind to all the little things you could enjoy even if it's a simple walk around the block.
