High school students are rushing out of the hallways this time of year for summer vacation and it's making us college kids yearn for our own high school days. Prom and graduation season has us reminiscing about our favorite high school memories, like skipping class periods to go hang out with your friends, pep-rallies, all-nighters, and of course, prom. Those four years were either the best four years of your life or the most awkward, and maybe even the most terrible years of your life. Perhaps it was even a little bit of both, but either way, there are memories to love about those days and moments to miss as a college student.
1. Short walks to class.
Gone are the days your next class is right next door, a couple feet away, or down the hallway. Wouldn't it be nice to not have to walk across campus or down streets just to get to your next class?
2. Having a locker.
Don't you miss the days when you didn't need to walk around with every book you needed for the day if your classes are back to back? We used to be able to just stop at our lockers and pick up and drop off books without needing a chiropractor like we do in college.
3. Hanging out with your friends after school.
The nice thing about high school is that you and all your friends have the same schedule; you start school at 8 a.m. and end at 3 p.m. That means you're all free to go hang at someone's house or somewhere local in town for a couple of hours before you start your homework.
4. Not having a lot of homework.
In high school, yes, it seemed like a lot of work. But homework in high school is nothing compared to homework in college. In high school you would just put in a couple of hours, sometimes not even one hour, of work and you were done. In college, it never ends. Let's face it, if you're not doing work in college it's not because you don't have any, it's because you're choosing not to do it.
5. Pep rallies.
Ah, the good-ol-days of pep-rallies when you got to skip a class period or two to sit in your gym or outside and participate (or watch) ridiculous school spirit games and cheers. You got to miss class just to watch your teachers or classmates make fools out of themselves trying to "rally" up the school's spirit.
6. Having close relationships with your teachers.
We've all had those relationships with our teachers where we get so close to them that you hang out on lunch breaks, have nicknames for each other, and keep in touch after high school. You just can't get that close to a professor you have in college because you have them for a short period of time and they usually have so many other students that you would need to go to a lot of one-on-one office hours in order to develop any sort of relationship with them.
7. Skipping class periods.
In high school it really wasn't a big deal if you missed a class or two to go hang out with friends on off periods or just go home to sleep. You didn't miss an entire lesson on multiple chapters of your textbook that are going to be on a pop-quiz or test next class like you do in college.
8. Senior scavenger hunts.
We've all had something with our grades when we were seniors that involved a final prank or something like a scavenger hunt. It was your last hoorah with your grade (other than senior cut day) when you would get together and do ridiculous things. If you had a senior scavenger hunt like I did, then you had a messed up list of things to do or find created by the graduating class above you, that you did with a team of your friends and filmed for evidence. Whatever happened during that scavenger hunt, stayed at that scavenger hunt.
9. Long school breaks.
Yes, in college we get a nice, long summer, but in high school there is literally a break every few weeks for a random holiday or just because they felt like a break was needed in February and a month of school was just too long. I know I wish I could go back to the days when I had random week-long breaks and long-weekends.
10. Prom season.
Last, but especially not least, comes prom season. In high school, this happens twice when you are a junior and a senior, and even though it is a stressful time trying to figure out who you are taking, what dress you are wearing, and what to do for pre-prom and after prom, it is a glorious and exciting time. It is the one night as a high school student that you were allowed to stay out all night and got to dress up like a princess. Sure, in college there are fancy events like Greek life formals and such, but there is nothing like prom when you can wear a full length dress and party with your entire grade.
Yes, college is great, but there was really nothing like high school and there never will be again. So it is important to cherish our memories and reminisce about the good-ol-days when life was just a little bit easier.
