10 Things You Miss About College When You Go Home For Summer

I know it sounds crazy, but once you go off to college your whole outlook towards school changes. Instead of it being some sort of horrible thing you dread waking up for, it feels like a nine-month long vacation. If you’re like me, aside from the occasional human interaction, your summer consists of daily binge watching Netflix. Don’t get me wrong I love my Netflix, but too much of a good thing can definitely be bad. As the school year draws to a close all you can think about is how excited you are for summer, but once summer starts all you can think about is how much you want to go back.

1. Late night food runs.

I don’t care what people say, wanting a burrito at 3 a.m. is never “irrational.”

2. The friends you made.

All of the crazy people you’ve grown so fond of are now in a completely different state. They played crucial roles in your most epic stories, seen you at your absolute worst, and all you want to do is make more memories with them.

3. The stuff that shall remain nameless, but you all know what I mean.

I’m going to leave this one open to interpretation.

4. The ability to meet a new person everyday.

You’re constantly diving into a sea of unfamiliar faces. This gives you the opportunity to discover some profoundly incredible people you probably never would’ve met in your hometown. Plus college is huge, so if you embarrass yourself in front of one person there are still a bunch of other people who have no idea how weird you are....yet.

5. Always having something to do.

Obviously we all have times where boredom gets the best of us. However, at college there is always someone to hang out with so binge watching Netflix becomes a choice and not a last resort.

6. FREEDOM.

The freedom to be spontaneous, to come and go as you please, and not have to worry about explaining anything to anyone…well maybe except to the occasional cop.

7. The sense of community.

Sporting events, tailgates, concerts, parties, everything. Everyone comes together to support our school and make it the place we all love. For example at U of A no matter what our differences may be we can all agree that we want ASU to lose.

8. Uber drivers.

They’re like little fairy godmothers that drive you around at night and make sure you don’t die. How great are they?!

9. The Morning After.

So this one is kind of a hit or miss, but you can’t deny that trying to piece together remnants of the night before can be extremely entertaining. Also morning after food is such a beautiful thing.

10. Independence.

You have this amazing opportunity to do things solely for yourself, not for your parents or for anyone else. No one is there to tell you how to live your life. You are entirely responsible for you, and that can be both scary and awesome.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.
