"True friendship isn't about being inseparable, it's being separated and nothing changes". I'm so lucky to have met so many amazing people in my life so far. I have really close friends that live down the street and friends that live in a different time zone. It's hard when you don't physically see them often, but when I do, I cherish every second of it. It's been quite an adventure with having long distance friendships. I look forward to daily Snapchats, receiving snail mail, the crazy group messages, long calls, and infinite memories.
1. FaceTime or Skype often
I'm so thankful for the inventions of FaceTime and Skype. When you don't get to see the lovely faces of your friends every day, these features are great for catching up with a group of people.
2. Planning road trips to see them during break
College students have fall, winter, spring, and summer break. So if our football team is playing against their school, we can make it a reunion.
3. Snapchat is your best friend
I love Snapchat because it's a great way to see what your friends are up to. With the new Snapchat streak feature, it motivates us to stay in contact with each other.
4. You ask people from that area if they know that person/school
"Where are you from?" "Oh, do you know ___?" People get confused when you know someone from a different city.
5. You talk about them all the time to your family/friends
My family is probably tired of me talking about these mysterious friends. You could be telling them about your next reunion or a cool story.
6. Looking up flights when you're bored
When boredom strikes, I find myself looking up flights. It would be great if I could fly for free all the time because I would love to see my friends more often!
7. Tweeting that you miss them
One of the cons of having long distance friends is that you miss them all the time. You find yourself wondering what it would be like if you lived in their city and how different life would be.
8. You have a personal tour guide when you're in town
When you go to their city, you have someone to take you around and if you're lucky, even a place to stay! There is no need to hire a tour guide when you have someone to drive you around to all the main attractions! It's great because you get a different perspective than a typical generic tour.
9. Crying when you have to say "bye"
It's a sad moment when you have to say good-bye to some of the greatest people in your life. And I would be lying if I said that I've never ugly cried (like worse than Kim Kardashian) when I had to say bye to the friends that live man miles away. How lucky am I to have something that makes saying good bye so hard.
10. Making fun of their slang
If you are from the South and you have a northern friend or vice versa, our slang is a little different. There is always the discussion of "coke" versus "pop," and "y'all" versus "you guys." We also debate the pronunciation of "turbulence," "ambulance" and "Aeropostale."
