Moth-er (noun): a woman in relation to a child or children to whom she has given birth... In other words, an angel sent from Heaven.
I had never lived anywhere else other than my house till almost three years ago when I moved into my college dorm as a freshman. I can still remember my mom crying as she said goodbye to me, even though school was only 45 minutes away from home. Fast-forward to today, and I can honestly say that living away from home has been a real eye-opener and has taught me many things about my mom. Here are 10 things living away from home has taught me about my fabulous mom:
1. She is always there for you.
No matter what, Mom is always just a phone call away. Whether I’m having a terrible or a great day, I’ve noticed myself reaching for my phone to call her and talk to her about it. Even when you're miles from home, mothers still know when something isn’t right, and end up calling you first. I guess what they say about mothers intuition is right!
2. You're more like her than you think.
But really, you’re like her mini-me. I have noticed that I am pretty much turning into the same person as my mom, which is great. I’ll find myself cleaning my room the exact way she cleans the house or doing the laundry and folding my clothes just like she does. I’ve even noticed my laugh turning scarily similar to her abnormally loud one. Sometimes I’ll even look into the mirror and notice I look more and more like her every day.
3. She's not getting any younger and neither are you.
As sad as that is to think of, it’s nothing but the truth. Each day we’re older than we were the previous day, so it’s not worth getting into small arguments with your mom when you know you’ll call back in five minutes to make up. I’ve learned how important it is to cherish every moment with your mom. Spending time with your mom is a great thing-- you know nothing makes her happier!
4. She's more like a best friend (she's a cool mom).
As the crazy teenage years have passed and I’ve entered adulthood, I’ve learned that my mom is more like a best friend. Being that she is my mom, we get along so well. She’s always there to make me laugh and we have some pretty great times when we’re together. Nothing beats a friendship with your mom.
5. She is and always will be your number one fan.
You can always count on your mom to be your personal cheerleader. Even if it isn’t something huge, moms will always make it a big deal and make you feel great about yourself. I’ve learned that no matter what it is, like a good grade on a test or cooking something correctly, your mom will always make you feel like a million bucks!
6. You still depend on her.
Although I’m technically supposed to be a young adult living on my own, I’ve realized that I still do depend on my mom and without her I would probably be stranded on an Island. She has done everything for me growing up and I'm not ready to let that go. If I’m not feeling well, I still call her, give her a list of symptoms and ask her what it is I should take. If I don’t know how to wash a specific dress, mom will definitely know what to do. Mom is always there for the rescue!
7. Family is the most important.
Being away from home, my mom has taught me how truly important family is and always will be because of how deeply she cares for all of us. She’ll do anything she can for her family. No matter what mistakes you make, my mom has taught me that it’s important to know you’ll always have her and your family by your side. My mom has helped me to realize how short life is and how special time spent with her and family should be!
8. Her love for you is infinite.
A mother's love for her child is forever infinite. Although I have always known this, being away from her has really shown me what that infinite love is like. Mom's are wiling to do anything in their power for their children, and it is quite amazing. My mom's love for me will always be with me, no matter where life takes me.
9. She will always worry about you.
This is a given. I've definitely learned that even if you're in your dorm watching TV, your mom will probably be at home worrying some crazy thing will happen to you. But really, every unrealistic scenario is running through every mom's mind at all times. Let's be real, worrying is something every mom will always do. Probably when you're with her, she will still be worrying as well.
10. You will always be her baby.
Even when you’re 40 with children of your own, you will always be your mom’s baby. I mean after all, she did give birth to you. So just embrace it and let her have her weird ten minute long hugs.
All in all, there is no better feeling than being wrapped in your mom’s arms. Step back and appreciate all that she has and will continue to do for you! Thank you, mom, for being so fabulous! I love you.
