The 10 Best Things About Coming Home

Man, it's good to be back.

The 10 Best Things About Coming Home

Well, it's here. That time you have been looking forward to since spring break is finally upon us: summer break. Summer break means a lot of things, one of which is heading home to a known landscape and familiar people. Here are the 10 best things about the time we get off from school:

1. Momma's cooking

When I got home, my mom had dinner laid out on the table for me and I almost cried tears of joy. No matter how good cafeteria food is or how great of a chef you swear you are, you will never beat mom's cooking.

2. Your dog (or any furry member of the family)

Just as good as the cooking, the greeting of your pet as if to a long lost friend is the final affirmation that, yes, you're home. No matter how the semester went, that first greeting with Lucky (or whatever your dog/cat's name is) makes it all better. It's definitely more therapeutic than the scolding you will get from your parents about it.

3. Seeing old friends

All the old jokes come back, the old times reminisced over and a lot of new memories are made. These are the people that you became who you are now with, and they understand you better than most of the people do in college or will in the real world. It's always great to come back and cause some chaos with them.

4. Rest and relaxation

After the hyperactivity your person endures during finals week, I came home and sat on the couch for a solid 4 hours just simply decompressing. Not having a tight knit schedule is such a blessing.

5. No more arguing about sports

"There's no way he's better than him!" "How in the WORLD do you like them?"

Yeah, I heard a lot of both of these this semester, especially being a New England fan (we aren't really liked outside of New England, go figure). Coming back to the region where sports fans actually agree with the things you say is miraculous. The first time I saw my friend, he was wearing a Free Brady shirt, and I couldn't help but smile. My people.

6. Your bed

You spend eight months telling yourself that your college bed isn't that bad, that its actually pretty comfortable. Then you come home and realize the egregious lie you had been telling yourself. That first night I felt like I was sleeping on a cloud; it must have taken less than five minutes to fall asleep.

7. Driving again

I genuinely missed this during my time in college. Sure it's nice to have someone drive you places, but having the freedom to start up your car and just drive is so much better.

8. Being in your home town

Nothing beats NH; I'm sorry, it's true. The landscape is just so gorgeous, it looks like a Better Home and Gardens magazine on every street you drive down. Plus the people are so nice.

9. "Mom, can I have money?"

I don't advise using your mother as your personal piggy bank, but it is comforting to know that if you are in a tight spot your mother can bail you out.

Although I really hope that isn't a literal 'bailout' for any of you

10. Family time

Seeing your friends is fun, relaxation is enjoyable, but being able to come home and hangout with the family is something that is more and more rare as we get older. Having these solid 3 month breaks to cherish their company is the best part about summer break.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
