You've had those moments when you were fed up with the subzero winter temperatures, and wished you picked a warmer climate to attend school in. But as you finish your last final, you walk through campus and realize what is so special about your school, and why you love it so much. In the meantime, here are 9 things all college freshman nationwide have experienced this year.
1. Feeling Lonely. It's inevitable.
You're away from your family, your home, your friends you've grown up with your entire life. You put into a completely new environment with basically no rules and absolutely no adult supervision. With so much free time you're bound to have times where you wish you were sitting at your kitchen table, sharing your day with your family. It happens.
2. Communication Issues.
Your friends are attending colleges all across the country. You're on different schedules, and sometimes these schedules don't match up. You'll go from talking to your friends every day, to slowly only talking to them once a week. But in the end, there's nothing to worry about. Before you know it you'll be home on break and can fill in all those empty cracks and share all of the crazy experiences you weren't able to before.
3. Getting your first bad grade.
No matter what your major is, from business to English to physics to engineering, there will come a time where we'll all receive our first bad test grade. Whether it was a lack of studying, a terrible teacher, or just a class that is too damn hard we all get through it. Grades won't kill you.
4. Bad Hookups.
Let's face it, some college freshmen have many hookups. Whether it's at the bar, a frat party, or maybe on a tinder date, every freshman will experience it(unless of course you're in a loyal relationship, then props to you).
And since not all of these hookups can be with Mr.Perfect who sits in front of you in econ and smells like Ralph Lauren cologne, some of them won't be too hot. We've all been there, and although your friends will pick on you about it and you'll regret it indefinitely, it's an experience and we all get through it.
5. Eating the same thing in the dining hall every day.
After eating turkey sandwiches just about every day this entire year, I don't think I can ever eat one again. You're going to find one thing in the dining hall that doesn't gross you out as much as everything else and I swear, you will go weeks eating that for at least one meal of the day every day. You will.
6. The infamous freshman 15.
Let's face it, we all go into college thinking, "it won't be me I won't gain the freshman 15." And then before you know it, your favorite pair of jeans just will not button and your favorite dress just doesn't look quite right. I hate to say it, but yes, treating yourself to that milkshake after that physics test will make you gain the freshman 15.
Because a milkshake becomes a milkshake and chicken fingers. And then a milkshake and chicken fingers become your go to after exam treat. And then, 15 pounds later, it's bikini season.
7. Meeting New People.
You're going to get to school and meet a group of people. For the first few weeks of school, your'e going to think these people are your best friends. After a while, you begin to all join different clubs and join different sororities.
Before you know it, these people are just people you say hi on campus and hug when you see them out downtown. You're going to meet so many people and eventually find the group of friends who will actually remain your friends forever.
Whether it's your suitemates, your classmates, or your sorority sisters, these people will be your go-to, and the worst part of leaving school will be leaving them.
8. Loving your school.
When you get that first moving out notice, you're going to realize how fast the year flew by. All of those late nights studying, frat parties, and everything else will soon take a three-month halt.
It's time to say goodbye to all of your amazing new friends, and to your school that you've called home for the past 9 months. You've had your ups and downs. Like that time, you told your mom you wanted to transfer home, or when you hated your classes so much you contemplated switching majors. You had those moments when you were fed up with the subzero winter temperatures, and wished you picked a warmer climate.
But as you finish your last final, you walk through campus and realize what is so special about your school, and why you love it so much. When it's time to leave, your upset, but excited to no longer be the new kids on campus.
