Upon starting college, you think about all of the wonderful things that await you in the coming four years; the new friends, the huge parties, the invigorating protests, the, uh learning… I guess. However, when the big day finally arrives… “Move In Day”, you find yourself in utter shock that the university is actually going to make you live in those teeny tiny, shoebox sized dorm rooms (no, this is not a joke). But wait, there’s more. You’re going to have to live in it with not only one, but maybe even two other people! Sounds inhumane right? I thought it was.
But now that the big day, “Move Out Day”, is creeping up, I actually find myself feeling nostalgic about leaving, as oddly enough, I have come to love my shoebox. Aside from my awesome roommates, here are some other things I am actually going to miss about living in a dorm room.1. My desk
We’re talkin’ a perfectly sized, perfectly shaped, perfectly crafted desk, that I have eaten on, spilled on (not just water), cried on, stood on, sat on, and even slept on. My desk has grown to be a part of me, with pictures hanging to the left, the massive whiteboard in the front, and endless sorority decorations all around it, saying goodbye to this one will truly be a tragedy.
2. The mini fridge
Say it with me now, “m-i-n-i f-r-i-d-g-e”. I feel like this
one speaks for itself, because I don’t know about you, but my room at home
surely does not have a mini fridge in it (so lame). And let’s be real, how much
easier is it to be able to open the fridge, while still sitting in bed? A lot.
Getting used to walking all the way to the kitchen is going to be rough.
3. Talking to your BFF while showering
Communal showers are GREAT. Showering at home is so lonely;
you just stand there, bored, going through the motions of good hygiene. In the
dorms however, there’s always someone showering in the stall next to you, who
you can talk to, and who will empathize with you when you get burned by the
water or get soap in your eye. And here’s the best part: shower duets. I really
am going to miss those.
4. The movie theater room
When our dorms got renovated recently, they decided to throw
in a movie theater room for us, because, I mean why not? And let me just tell
you, I sure am glad that the money went to that instead of something useless like
new roads or something, because who needs those? There’s nothing like deciding
via your “Best Friends Forever” group message that the squad is actually going
to stay in tonight and watch a movie on the big screen in the movie theater
room. I’d also like to thank Netflix for the part it plays in this indulgence.
5. Being able to run to your friend’s room… whenever.
Anytime, day or night, for any reason, good or bad, it’s so nice to be able to simply run two or three doors down when you need advice from a friend, on literally anything. From which picture to Instagram, to what to wear, to how to reply to a text, no reason to go over is too big or small when it all it takes to get there is walking a couple feet.
6. Strong wifi
Every college girl and boy’s best friend: wifi.
You’d think that the wifi at the dorms would be bad because of all of the people
using it, but nope, it always strongly radiates, without problems (for the most part). And you know what that means… no buffering when watching Netflix.
Hallelujah.
7. And wifi everywhere
Sitting on the toilet? Yep, its there. Laying in bed?
Definitely there. Taking out the trash and want to check Snapchat? Don’t worry,
there’s wifi out there too. Outside playing basketball? No need to fear, you
can still scroll through Instagram when you’re benched, or “just taking a
break”.
8. Shared wardrobes.
Did I say shared wardrobes? Oops, I meant shared closets… but really, aren’t those one in the same? The only plus side to sharing a closet, is also sharing the contents inside of it. I sure am going to miss going back to only having my clothes to work with when trying to create cute outfits. I actually don’t know how I’m going to live without my (roommate’s) clothes all summer.
9. The dining commons.
With constantly changing variations of pizza, pasta, wraps, sandwiches, mac n' cheese, soup, tacos, ice cream, etc., it is clear to me why the “freshman 15” is a thing. But the daunting thought of weight gain sure didn’t stop me from going to the dining commons for breakfast, lunch, and dinner everyday. I mean with such convenience and so many options, why would you ever go anywhere else? And you can literally eat your weight in food at each meal, and not even have to pay for it (up front at least)!
10. Late night.
Oh boy how I am going to miss being able to come back to the
dorms after a long night of… hanging out… and go straight into the dining
commons for the iconic “late night” meal. Where I can feast on ice cream,
french fries, cucumbers, and probably some cereal, to satisfy the drunchies.
Long live late night, and long live the dorm life.
