The legend of the Bermuda Triangle started around 1945 when five US Navy aircraft disappeared on a training flight from Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Since then, 75 more aircraft have gone missing as well as hundreds of ships. The mystery as to why this happens is still unclear, but scientists have developed many possible solutions. Below you will find ten theories that could possibly solve the mystery of the Bermuda Triangle.
1. Severe Weather
In the Bermuda Triangle, severe storms develop so fast that meteorologists cannot predict them accurately. These storms happen with no warning and finish so quickly that they don’t show up on radar. These storms can include tornadoes, hurricanes, and thunderstorms, all of which can drastically decrease visibility. The lack of visibility can cause pilots to dive straight into the water without realization, or it could cause a wave big enough to wipe out an entire ship. These storms can be so strong that as soon as they're pulled under the water, the debris can be spread throughout hundreds of miles making it harder for them to be located.
2. Freak Waves
Freak Waves are also known as Rogue Waves, and these waves no joke! The first Rogue Wave that was confirmed with scientific evidence was 84 feet tall. How these waves form is still unknown, however, there are many theories. Some such as wild wave interactions, thermal expansions, and simply the strength of the current. These waves are so strong it could easily take down a whole ship or even cause a distraction for the pilots causing them to go down.
3. Hexagonal Clouds
Hexagonal clouds are said to create air bombs that send winds at up to 170 mph. That makes the wind alone powerful enough to create waves of at least 45 feet tall. It is said that with winds that strong, it can cause ships to flip over and aircraft to come falling out of the sky and into the ocean.
4. Methane Gas
Scientists have discovered that trapped beneath the ocean floor, there are large amounts of methane gas. When this gas gets released, it can cause the ocean density to decrease dramatically sending ships straight down to the pitch-black depths of the ocean floor. As the gas bubbles rise to the surface of the water, it is said that they grow in size and can even get to be the size of one of the ships above. As soon as one of the ships pass over it, the gas bubble explodes and the ship is engulfed. This explosion can be so big that it can cause aircraft to catch fire and go down.
5. Compass Variation
I’m sure I am not the only person who did not know that the Magnetic North and the Geographic North are not aligned. However, somewhere within the Bermuda Triangle, there is a spot where both of these align perfectly. It is said that the sudden alignment will throw off the direction of the compass and the loss of direction causes the pilot/captain to crash.
6. Comets
It has been said that about 11,000 years ago, a comet hit Earth and landed right where the Bermuda Triangle is located. Some scientists and theorists suggest that there are electromagnetic properties coming off the comet causing the navigational tools to malfunction. The only problem with this theory is that there is no evidence of a comet sitting on the seabed of this area.
7. Lost City of Atlantis
For those of you who are not familiar with the lost city of Atlantis, it was a mid-Atlantic continent that sunk into the ocean. Supposedly, this lost city lays right below the Bermuda Triangle. The legend states that Atlantis was powered by crystals and that these crystals still send out the same energy causing ships and aircraft to be taken off course due to the malfunctioning of navigation.
8. Time Warps
This is a theory that is quite bizarre, and that is the concept of time warps. Supposedly, time warps will open up over the Bermuda Triangle that sucks up aircraft and ships landing them in the same place, just at a different time period.
9. Aliens
This theory is for all of those people who believe aliens exist. Supposedly aliens chose the Bermuda Triangle as a gathering place to abduct human life because it is above an uncivilized place: the middle of the ocean. There are a few reported UFO sightings, but there is no proof that it actually exists.
10. Finally, nothing.
There is a theory that the Bermuda Triangle is a fictional location. Supposedly all of the disappearances are hurricanes, and that debris has been found for each sunken aircraft and ship but will not be mentioned because the mystery of this triangle keeps all of America wondering.
