10 Things I'm Thankful For
Sarah McKalip

Since it's the holiday season, I just want to spend some time to list several things that I am thankful for. With all the black Friday shopping and gift wrapping it's easy to get caught up in the hustle and the bustle of the holiday season but I want to reflect on the things that really mean the most to me. I am so blessed with many wonderful things in my life, even if it's things that I may take for granted every day. So instead of griping about what I don't have I just want to reflect on what this up coming season of thanksgiving means to me.

I hope this year we all take aside some time to love the ones around us and be grateful for all that we have been blessed with, even if it's not everything dreamy it's something, and that's a lot to be thankful for. So here's to the beginning of the holiday season!

1. Jesus

I would be nothing without him. He makes everything good and my life would be a total disaster without his love and goodness. He is the reason I wake up every day and the reason that keeps me going when life isn't all bells and whistles. He is the constant joy in my life.

2. My family

We may bicker and argue some but I wouldn't trade my family for anything in the world. I love everyone in my family, and all the many gatherings the holiday season may bring upon me. I love laughing and watching TV, it's the little things that mean the most.

3. My friends

My friends, I am so thankful for. Where do I even begin, we've seen each other laugh and cry and cry until we laugh. Distance means nothing when the friendship is strong. So I am thankful for you guys. You've seen me at lows and highs. You always make me smile. Near and far I love you guys. They say friends are the family you get to chose, and you guys are just extra siblings!

4. My job

Sometimes working may not be all fun and games, but I'm thankful that I have a job that puts a roof over my head, clothes on my back, and food on the table. It's not super dreamy, but I love where I work and I love the people that I work with. A good work environment is everything, and I'm happy to say that I love everything about where I work.

5. My vehicle

My vehicle is not the greatest thing in the world, but it gets me from point A to point B, and it drives well. It's big enough to keep me safe and has a decent radio, that's really all I need in a good truck.

6. The holiday season

It is a great time of year to just reflect and remember the real meaning of the season. It is a time for family and friends from near and far to gather and be joyful together. From Thanksgiving to New Year's I love the holiday season. It makes me so happy to see people reaching out and being generous over the holidays.

7. Music

I am so thankful for good music. Music has so much influence on how you feel a good positive song can instantly change my mood from bad to good. So I love that I have the ability to play piano and ability to have so much music just on my phone and radio.

8. Coffee

Any one who knows me knows that I love coffee. Not too many days go by where I haven't had at least a few cups of the stuff. So if you want to get to my heart a good cup of coffee is definitely the key. To whoever created coffee grounds, you're much loved.

9. Journalism

I am thankful for this amazing form of news. I love being able to read the news online and watch it on TV. I have an immense respect for any Journalist and am proud of every single writer. I am thankful that we have an access to news, even if what we read and hear isn't always good.

10. People

I am thankful for the people of this world. I love talking to people and just watching the world go by. I love that there are about 7 billion people in the world. That we're all different, and we're all changing. I am excited that people exist, and I love life in general. I am thankful for mankind.

So this holiday season, just take a minute and reflect on what you are truly thankful for. Make a list, and count your blessings, and tell the ones around you, that you love them every chance you can. The holiday season is meant to be embrace and to spread joy! So speak life and be thankful!

Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
