10 Study Break Ideas to Try Over Finals Week

It's coming up on finals week, which means a lot of studying and writing papers and preparing presentations. It's a lot of stress crammed into two weeks: finals and dead week.

Here are some study break ideas you can try to de-stress a little and let your mind rest for a few minutes!

1. Exercise

I'm not huge on running or going to the gym, but my roommate and I have really been enjoying workout videos that we find online. They are perfect for a short study break, and definitely get the blood flowin' and endorphins pumpin'! My personal favorite is The Fitness Marshall. We may look like idiots while trying to do these dances, but they sure are a blast! Or, you can go with a classic, like Richard Simmons. Or else, go for a run, go throw a frisbee around outside, just get up and moving.

2. Take a nap

20 minutes is the ideal nap length. So, set like, 5 alarms, find a warm blanket, and shut your eyes for a few minutes. This gives you time to refresh and relax!

3. Eat some food!

I know when I have something big coming up, I sometimes forget to eat. Take a study break, grab an apple and some soup and step away from your textbooks and laptop.

4. Bake some cookies

Not only will you be happy when you eat them, your friends and hallmates will love you forever.

5. Watch some Netflix or Youtube

A 20-minute episode of FRIENDS or How I Met Your Mother or maybe some Ellen on YouTube, find something that will make you laugh.

6. Clean/Pack

It's almost time for break, and you want to leave your room looking nice, so put on some fun music and clean part of your room, or pack your suitcase. Not only is it a good way to get moving, but it will also provide less stress when you need to move out.

7. Coffee Break

Grab your roommate or a friend and head to a local coffee place. Grab some coffee, talk about anything and everything except finals and school. Plus, coffee shops provide great distractions and really interesting people to observe.

8. Take a Shower

For me, the shower is extremely relaxing. I love to be able to just go clear my mind while taking a shower, and it provides a wonderful way to get away from work for a few minutes. Plus, it's a great time to sing with no judgment.

9. Go for a calming walk

Not a fast power walk, just a calm walk around campus, town, or wherever is nearby. Look at trees, put down technology, and just enjoy the fresh air (yes, even if it is raining).

10. Play Music

Whether playing it on a device and singing along, grabbing a guitar, drum, or ukulele, or finding the nearest piano, play some music, sing some songs, and let your mind wander for a few minutes.

So take a few minutes over finals week to try some new (or maybe you already do these!) study break ideas! And good luck!

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
