10 Myths About Sorority Girls

Joining a sorority is fun and challenging at the same time. One thing you learn to handle after joining a sorority is the amount of stereotypes that people give you, constantly judging you without ever talking to you.

1. "You pay for your friends."

When you join a sorority, you meet a lot of new people. You meet girls in every grade from many different backgrounds. We don't pay to make these long-lasting friendships. Many of us knew these girls already from home or classes and were lucky to have gotten to be in the same sorority as them. Many of us were given the opportunity to meet new girls through joining a sorority too. We don't pay these girls to like us or to hangout with us. We meet people who love and support us in all we do, making an unbreakable sisterhood bond.

2. "Sorority girls don't have high GPAs."

What many people do not realize is that to go through recruitment, sororities look at your grades. Each house has a required semester and cumulative GPA that must be maintained to be in good standing with the chapter. If they fail to maintain these grades, they can be placed on probation from events, have to log study hours, etc. I am personally proud of my own chapter for having the second highest GPA among the sororities on campus.

3. "Sorority girls will only date frat boys and sleep around."

I guess we can thank all the wild college and spring break movies for this one. In all reality, I have sisters who do date fraternity boys and some who do not. I have sisters that date boys at the others colleges. Some of my sisters do not have boyfriends. Not every frat boy dates a sorority girl and not every sorority girl dates a frat boy. We all meet someone, somewhere, sometime.

4. "All sorority girls do is party."

College is a whirlwind of new experiences. While going out to parties is fun, sorority girls do a lot more than this. We have meetings, philanthropy events(World Sight Day, visiting a local school for the visually impaired and helping drive those who need or help because of their visual disabilities), and sisterhood events (movie nights, roller-skating, yoga, tie dying shirts) too-all of which do not involve partying.

5. "Sorority girls are only friends with their sorority sisters."

Although I have made close friends through my sorority, I have made several friends from my dorm, classes, and home town that are not affiliated with Greek life, and I am still just as close to them.

6. "Sorority girls get hazed."

Sororities have a strict NO HAZING policy, enough said.

7. "Sorority girls only wear designer clothes and big t-shirts."

Some girls do wear designer clothes, and others do not. How we dress is simply up to us-just like everyone else in the world! You'll probably catch us proudly wearing our big t-shirts splashed with our letters, but even my non-Greek friends wear big t-shirts- I know I did before college.

8. "Sorority girls care more about themselves than others."

Every sorority has a philanthropy that they hold events and fundraise for.

9. "All sorority girls have daddy's money."

Personally, I've been working since I was 15. My parents very kindly help me out with a lot of things in my life, but plenty of us are paying for this on our own and working hard to do so.

10. "Housewives in training."

Last time I checked, my future didn't include doing all the housework and waiting hand and foot on a man. I have a future career of my own in the works.

Before you try to stereotype another sorority girl, talk to them first, it might surprise you how wrong you were about them.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
