Every year around February I tend to get ridiculously romantic and melancholy. With the approach of Valentine's Day, I can't help but feel both lovey-dovey and bitter about the whole affair. Therefor, for the hopeless romantics, lonely hearts, and melancholy maidens out there, I compiled a list of ten songs to get you through the Valentine's blues.
1. "Photograph" (Ed Sheeran)
"Loving can hurt, loving can hurt sometimes. But it's the only thing that I know..."
I can't not start this list without an Ed Sheehan song. This song just makes me feel things. It's sweet and bittersweet.
2. "Skinny Love" (Birdy)
"I tell my love to wreck it all. Cut out all the ropes and let me fall..."
I love Birdy's cover of this iconic Bon Iver song. She has a beautifully delicate voice, and the piano accompaniment makes it the perfect song to listen to when you're working on something and you're feeling some kind of way about someone.
3. "And So It Goes" (Billy Joel)
"But if my silence made you leave, then that would be my worst mistake. So I will share this room with you, and you can have this heart to break..."
This song inspired this list. I heard it on the radio on the way to a rehearsal and it shook my heart. It's such a gorgeous song about risking heartbreak for love in the most tender way.
4. "Lover's Eyes" (Mumford and Sons)
"Should you shake my ash to the wind, Lord forget all of my sins and let me die where I lie beneath the curse of these lovers eyes..."
This is my favorite song, so I had to include it. I'm a romantic to the core, and the poetry of Mumford and Son's lyrics gets me every time. This song deals with the sheer weight of love and heartbreak.
5. "She is Love" (Parachute)
"I've been beaten down, I've been kicked around. But she takes it all for me. And I lost my faith, in my darkest days. She makes me want to believe..."
I just want someone to sing this song about me someday. It's such a sweet testament to how someone truly special can embody love and better a person.
6. "The Scientist" (Coldplay)
"I was just guessing at numbers and figures, pulling your puzzles apart. Questions of science; science and progress do not speak as loud as my heart..."
The perfect song for when you're feeling melancholy or thinking about a past relationship you wish you could start over.
7."Both Sides Now" (Joni Mitchell)
"I've looked at love from both sides now, from give and take and still somehow it's love's illusions I recall. I really don't know love at all..."
Yes, this is the song from Love, Actually that Emma Thompson cries to because Alan Rickman was a horrible husband. It's such a lovely and bittersweet reflection on not just love, but life as well. It's just just Emma Thompson that can have a good cry to this song.
8. "Sleeping to Dream" (Jason Mraz)
"As I lay me down tonight, I close my eyes and what a beautiful sight. I'm sleeping to dream about you. I'm so tired of having to live without you..."
Have you ever slept just to dream? Sometimes that's the only way you can have someone, in your dreams.
9. "Blue Skies" (The Workday Release)
"At long last I no longer seem to feel like ghost. At long last I no longer feel I'm cursed through the cold..."
I just happened to stumble across this song on Spotify. It's a lovely song about coming out of the storm and to, well, blue skies.
10) "Ophelia" (John Schmitt)
"And Kings will kill Kings and marry their Queens, love always seems to be lost on me..."
For the Shakespeare lovers out there, this song has many Hamlet references in it, but even if you aren't savvy with this play, this song is still a beautiful little song about love that is a bit more positive than its inspiration.
Let me know your favorite songs are to get through Valentine's Day!
