As someone who spends nearly all of their free time either watching movies or listening to music, I tend to retain a lot of knowledge about both subjects. Often I will be listening to either Spotify or Pandora and a song will come on that I immediately associate with a movie I have seen. Whenever this happens, I think about the movie and my mood changes to reflect the memories and subject matter of the film.
That said, here are a list of 10 songs that I immediately associate with a specific movie, and have the ability to transform how I am feeling:
1. "Sweet Disposition" by The Temper Trap and "500 Days of Summer"
Every time I hear this song I think back to the scene where Tom and Summer are strolling through the city looking at architecture and discussing their hopes and dreams. The cinematography alone in this scene is extremely aesthetically pleasing and always puts me in a relaxed mood. The chill vibes that this song gives off always takes me back to watching the movie and having hope for a better future.
2. "Tiny Dancer" by Elton John and "Almost Famous"
This is easily one of my favorite movie music scenes of all time. The song brings all of the arguing band members back together and changes the mood entirely. It is a true sentiment of how music can unite people and incite happiness when all else seems bleak.
3. "It's Time" by Imagine Dragons and "The Perks of Being A Wallflower"
Now what's unique about this song is that it wasn't actually in the movie, but rather was the soundtrack to the first official trailer. "Perks" was one of my favorite books as a young teenager and when the first trailer was released, this song fit so perfectly into the storyline that it brought me to tears. Every time I saw the trailer from that point on, and every time I simply heard the song, I would tear up from happiness.
4. "Wait For Me" by Motopony and "The First Time"
The first time I ever heard this song was in this movie, and it is now one of my favorite songs of all time. That said, every time that I hear this song I think back to the excitement I had when the movie was first released, and how I waited for so long to finally be able to watch it.
5. "Somewhere Over The Rainbow" by Israel Kamakawiwoʻole and "50 First Dates"
This song, which plays at the end of the movie, puts me in such a good mood. The scene, in which the two main characters literally sail off into the sunset, is impossible not to think about and smile. This song has the ability to make me go from insanely high strung to relaxed as soon as the first chord is played.
6. "God Only Knows" by the Beach Boys and "Love Actually"
The airport scene that this song plays during always brings a smile to my face. The overarching theme of love that this movie contains makes it my favorite movie of all time. Now, whenever I hear this song, I always become happier than I was. I can always listen to this when I'm in a bad mood and it will bring me back to thinking about this movie, thus transforming my mood.
7. "New Perspective" by Panic! At The Disco and "Jennifer's Body"
Although this movie has a lot of negative stigma and some terrible reviews, it is one of my favorite movies of all time. Truthfully, a huge part of my love for this insane movie is the soundtrack, which is in my opinion the best movie soundtrack of all time. Every time I hear this song in particular I remember the first time I saw it, how I fell in love with it, and how it turned me into an angsty punk-loving teen.
8. "Mad World" by Gary Jules and "Donnie Darko"
This may be one of the craziest movies of all time, but it is definitely a classic. That said, every time I hear this song I think about the first time I ever saw this film and how utterly confused I was. The lyrics fit so perfectly with the movie's storyline, and it has become a staple in the world of music in films.
9. "Black Sheep" by Metric & "Scott Pilgrim vs. The World"
Brie Larson's cover of Metric in this movie is one of my favorite covers of all time. The song brings me back to my teen angst years, with all my awkwardness, and makes me remember the countless times I would watch this film. Now I cannot hear the original version of this song and not think about how much I adore the movie.
10. "My Heart Will Go On" by Celine Dion and "Titanic"
Undeniably this is the ultimate music-movie moment. This is the one song that you cannot hear and 1. Not belt the lyrics to in the most off-tune way possible and 2. Not feel your heart squeeze a little bit over the unnecessary death of Jack Dawson.
