10 Songs for People Who Like Funky, Indie Music
Tiger Towson

My tastes in music have always been eclectic, to say the least. I love Broadway, classic rock, indie music, pop music, slow and fast songs, dance songs and songs with lyrics that blow minds. These songs listed below are for the quirky, the funky, the not-quite-right, the bohemian, the syncopated beat lovers, the former goths who have found their groove in the strange. This is for misfits and miscreants. Enjoy some funky music this summer. I recommend listening to them in this order, as well.

1. "Settle Down" Kimbra

What's better than funky, indie music? Funky, indie music where gender roles are destroyed and Kimbra breaks down walls and worlds and opens doors for all of us.

2. "Concrete Wall" Zee Avi

(Video Credit: Zee Avi VEVO)

This is a song where the background singing will be stuck in your head for days and you won't know why or how, but you'll be singing along with it by the 2nd or 3rd repeat. Addictingly good.

3. "Drop" Chloe x Halle

(Video Credit: Chloe x Halle)

I was just recently introduced to this song while overhearing it at my local Starbucks. Sick song. Great sound. This duo is unstoppable.

4. "Elastic Heart" Sia

(Video Credit: Sia VEVO)

The music video was extremely controversial when it first came out, but the music itself is brilliant. Lots of strange beats, lots of melodies that are haunting and off-putting. Great for first dates with other funky music lovers.

5. "You Haunt Me" Sir Sly

(Video Credit: Sir Sly VEVO)

This song had me with the lyrics "whisky and wine." This is a perfect funky drinking song or casual chill song. Or writing poetry song while sipping a beverage of choice.

6. "Lyla" Cocorosie

(Video Credit: Juana Dearco Music)

Cocorosie is one of those groups that it was hard to just pick one song. "Lyla" is brilliant. But so is "Terrible Angels" and "Candyland" and "Lemonade." All of these songs are a little funky, a little different, in their own ways. Just listen to all things Cocorosie and you'll be happy.

7. "Little Game" Benny

(Video Credit: BENNY)

This is the ultimate gender role discussion through music. With the mixture of paints in the music video to the lyrics, this song makes all funky music lovers pay attention.

8. "Stressed Out" Twenty One Pilots

(Video Credit: Fueled By Ramen)

This is the ideal funky song for end of finals week. We are all Blurryface. We are all just a little "stressed out." Definitely a must listen for young adults facing growing pains.

9. "Special Needs" Placebo

(Video Credit: Placebo)

From the album, "Sleeping with Ghosts," this song leaves the listener a little unnerved, which is definitely part of its appeal. This is for any young adults who have lost and learned how to cope.

10. "So Broken" Björk

(Video Credit: Holly Hetfield)

While definitely a softer song, there is a creepy feeling that the song leaves with the listener. The funky background beat only adds to the effect. The video included above is from "So You Think You Can Dance" with a piece choreographed by Sonya Tayeh.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Challah vs. Easter Bread: A Delicious Dilemma

Is there really such a difference in Challah bread or Easter Bread?

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.
