"Saturday Night Live" has always been my favorite TV show. Once I was a teenager and deemed "mature enough" to watch it with my parents, I would stay up every Saturday night. This still hasn't changed, and when I miss episodes I try to watch them online the next day. This show has always been very special for me, especially now that I'm studying journalism and broadcasting. I appreciate the work that goes into making this show work, week after week.
There are always hits or misses, when it comes to the sketches. There will always be ones that we'll remember forever from the beginning ("Matt Foley Motivational Speaker," anyone?) to recent acts of genius (the Adele Thanksgiving feast was golden). Below, I've listed 10 of my own personal favorites from the era that I started watching, ones that might not always immediately come to mind.
1. "Dear Sister."
This is the epitome of an excellent SNL digital short. After becoming popular with "Lazy Sunday," digital shorts have been a staple of every episode whether they're music videos, movie trailers or something like "Dear Sister." It makes absolutely no sense, but it is just so funny. It cracks me up no matter how many times I've watched it.
2. "Stefon and Seth Get Married."
Bill Hader's, Stefon, was the first reoccurring character that I got excited to see every week (at least, I hoped he would be on every time). But with the best send-off ever, Seth Meyers runs after Stefon and they live happily ever after. I remember being so excited because as sad as I was that Hader was leaving, he got the best goodbye possible.
3. "Celebrity Jeopardy 40th Anniversary."
The entirety of the 40th Anniversary Special was a gift in itself, but the return of the classic "Celebrity Jeopardy" was one that had me cracking up. It was basically an excuse to fit in as many celebrity impressions in a failed game of Jeopardy, but the return of some beloved ones we haven't seen in a while.
4. "Twin Bed" (with Jimmy Fallon).
Two things from this: I love when old cast members host because it's so natural for them, as seen here, and when SNL does music videos, they are always laugh out loud hilarious. So much so, this particular song was nominated for an Emmy!
5. "The Merryville Brothers" (with Bruno Mars).
Another thing SNL is great at is getting people to host that you wouldn't necessarily think would be good. Then, you get people like Bruno Mars that knock it out of the park and look like he's having fun doing so! Here's one of my favorites when he did "double duty" as host and musical guest.
6. "The Californians."
Besides the fact that my mom and I have always said "Stuart?!" like they do in The Californians, this is just a quotable and hilarious piece of comedy that became a favorite recurring sketch. But you can't not love Bill Hader breaking character in this because his face is amazing (just as good as Ryan Gosling's break when he recently hosted).
7. "Get In the Cage" (with Nicolas Cage).
8. "Prom Queen" (an SNL digital short).
It's sad that Mike O'Brien isn't in the cast anymore, but he still does an excellent job with directing digital shorts. When the start says "A Film by Mike O'Brien" you know it has to be the best blend of weird, yet genius.
9. Pete Davidson on Weekend Update.
When it was announced that the youngest cast member ever -- the first cast member born in the 1990s -- was hired at the beginning of season 40, I was looking forward to what he brought to the cast. Despite his contributions to the sketches, what really stands out for me is when he goes on Weekend Update as their "resident young person." He has a small collection of these, right now, so it was hard to choose which one to post but I got to see him perform this one live at a comedy club and his reference to Sanjaya from American Idol kills me.
10. Kylo Ren "Undercover Boss."
Perhaps the greatest and most popular YouTube video from SNL, "Undercover Boss" shows the absolute genius of the writers for coming up with this and making something that will most definitely be a classic in the future. I just love this one so much.
