It's very rare for me to use my writing chops to go back and highlight on my younger adolescent years, but when something is such a big part of your heritage I find it hard not to reminisce. For most of you that don’t know, I grew up on a dairy farm and with that comes many challenges, sacrifices, and heartache. Ironic as it maybe, but that part of my life is over and I’m currently attending school in the city (not too far from home I might add). Still, this was something that was (and still kind of) is rooted in me, and I know I can’t be the only one. So I’ve assembled a quick list of some telltale signs you grew up on a farm.
1. Huge odors don’t bother you.
Whether it be that huge pile of manure you used to spread in the field or the hygiene of your livestock, you have nostrils of steal.
2. You appreciate a day off.
Sure, I would get a day off from milking cows (for sporting events, a night or two with friends) - but that doesn’t mean production stop. Cows have to get milked twice a day, everyday (including holidays) they don’t take into consideration your time, because they don’t care.
3. What’s a bruise?
How many times have you been kicked by a cow, horse, or bitten by a pig? Pain is our middle name.
4. What’s sleeping in?
What do you mean you didn’t wake up until 12?
5. Gym workouts don’t quite compare to lifting hay bales.
Talk about getting jacked.
6. You understand that cow-tipping doesn’t happen.
No, people, this is not a thing.
7. You have a strong connection with a specific brand of farm equipment.
It’s either John Deere or Case… no in between.
8. Your neighbor is within a mile of your house (one of them could even be a relative)
In farming country...everyone is family.
9. There is a 94 percent chance you participated in local county fairs, FFA or 4H
Because winning.
