10 Signs You And Your Best Friend Are Actually Dating
Arli Swaney

It's starts with a simple joke. "Haha, oh my gosh, people are going to think we are dating!" You say it after you casually hug in the middle of campus for a straight hour, or at a party and when you are done you swear it's normal. But, as you walk away, the thought dawns upon you... we are real close, are we dating?

You laugh at yourself and you sound silly. But more and more people begin to joke about it. You try so hard to shrug it off and act like it's fine, but sooner or later you're going to have to accept that maybe you are dating your best friend.

You can choose to make it awkward or you can choose to embrace the fact that you are the ultimate friendship goals. I mean, it's basically the peak of your friendship.

If you are anything like me and my best friend, you question this daily. But, it's fine... everything's fine.

Here are ten signs you and your BFF might actually be dating:

1. You share everything.

Need an outfit? What about some late night snacks? Your best friend/girlfriend is there for you. They are the only person you are willing to let cry on your floor and eat all your food because you love them. The good thing about sharing everything is that you never run out of things! Clothes? You got two closets. Run out of meal swipes? Never, because you basically have two. You always have a friend to buy you coffee when you are feeling down, and they let you take sips of theirs to try out a new flavor. Is getting two straws too far? Nah.

2. You say things at the same time.

Someone asks you a question and you both blurt out the same response. You look at each other in amazement, but this is just the norm for you two. You do this on the daily. Sometimes you start singing the same songs, which is also very weird. But really when you think about it, you are always having jam sessions listening to the same songs, so is it really all that strange?

3. You touch way too much in public.

We all get sad. And you and your best friend/girlfriend are no different. Sometimes you need a good hand holding or long-lasting hug to feel a little better about all the troubles in your life. People look at you strangely, and some even comment about how often you guys must touch each other. But what’s the problem? She’s just my best friend. I love her. I need a hug, is there an issue?

4. Date nights are every night.

Pizza nights, movie nights, trash-talk nights—all are very special to you two. You appreciate them all, and they are just as exciting as any party or outing that you could go on. And it’s even better with your best friend/girlfriend.

5. People ask where they are when they aren’t with you.

“Hey, where’s (insert name)?” Whether you be at a party, class, or even home, people are bound to ask where your other half is. Since you are together all the time, it can feel weird when they aren’t with you, and people notice this. I mean, if you walked in the library without your arm one day, people might ask you where it went. That's what your best friend is... your arm? (Figuratively.)

6. Your family asks about them.

Instead of asking about your boyfriend, your family will be way more interested in your other half, best friend-wise. You take cute pictures together, call each other when you go home for the weekend, and miss each other when you are away from them for 7 minutes. Your mom might even pull you aside, very concerned, and ask you what’s going on with you and your best friend… it’s awk when you have to say “we’re just friends” and it’s 100% truthful (and not just some lie to get someone off your back).

7. When you’re not with them you feel sad inside.

The sad reality is that even though you and your best friend are always together, you do have to spend some time apart. And that’s not okay.

8. They are the only person you are willing to share food with.

Okay, I talked about the sharing thing earlier, but I need to emphasize the importance of food. Dead serious right now, if someone touches my food, I will hurt them. Especially French fries (even more serious if it’s a surprise curly fry). But, with your best friend, it’s easy. Heck, you’ll even feed them. As long as they are happy and full, you’ll feel a little better even though they ate the last one.

9. Sometimes you get confused and think you’re dating.

I mean, we held hands for two hours last night… are we dating?

10. You give them that look and they understand exactly what you are thinking.

When it comes to any situation, this person understands you through and through. And when you get put in a horrible position, your best friend can look at you from across the room, and you giggle. Their look says it all. Even more importantly, this look can get you out of situations too. Bad party? Look from across the way, and you can see it in her eyes: “Let’s get the hell out of here and go to Sheetz.” Or if there's some dude who’s trying to (poorly) hit on your BFF, one look and you can dive in to the rescue. Act like you might puke? Start crying? The options are limitless.

Maybe you're not single after all?

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
