10 Reminders When Things Go Wrong

Sometimes in life things do not work out the way we want them to. Life can get pretty rough, and it can feel like nothing is going our way and everything is a mess. When things go wrong, it's easy to feel defeated and stuck, but that doesn't do you any good. Sh*t happens, and life is going to throw you around, but when you feel as though the universe has turned its back on you, here are a few things you should remember.

1. Take a few deep breaths.

When you are completely overwhelmed and feel like the walls are closing in on you, all you have to do is remember to breathe and take a few deep breaths. Everything will be okay. Inhale, exhale, and take comfort in the fact that no matter how terrible things may be you are still alive and breathing.

2. It's not the end of the world.

In the moment, you feel as though your world is crashing down, and you wonder how you can go on, but you will always find a way. Challenges and hardships happen, and things don't always work out, but that doesn't mean that it will always be that way. You will pick yourself up and hold your head high and the world will keep spinning.

3. Everything happens for a reason.

Yes, I know it's a cliché, and honestly, when people used to say this to me I would roll my eyes and think, "Yeah, right." But honestly, life has a way of somehow making everything work out in the end, and when one door closes, another door opens. Trust that there is a plan for you and that you will end up being happy, even if you find it somewhere you never expected.

4. It's OK to cry.

If you want to cry, cry. Let it all out until your eyes are puffy, and your makeup is running. Crying is not a sign of weakness, it is a sign that you have been strong for far too long and need to let go. Things can get really hard and sometimes you just need a good cry. Allow yourself to cry when you need it and then dry your tears and put a smile back on your face.

5. It's OK to ask for help.

There are people who love and care about you and have been through similar experiences, so do not be afraid to ask them for help. Sometimes life's burdens can become too heavy to carry alone. When you feel as though you are drowning in a sea of troubles, allow someone to help pull you to shore, and be sure to return the favor eventually.

6. Everything is temporary.

Yeah, things suck right now, but it's only temporary. This is just a rough patch in an otherwise beautiful life. Whatever it is that is bothering you right now will not matter a year from now, and you have to remember that. Don't allow temporary things to get in the way of your happiness.

7. Think of all the positives in your life.

For everything that is going wrong, there is probably something that is going right. In the midst of your struggles, don't forget about the good things happening for you. Think of all your friends and family and that awesome paper you just got a good grade on. Find little things that make you smile even when all you want to do is cry.

8. You are loved.

You are loved more than you will ever know. Though you may feel worthless or alone, you are not. There are so many fabulous people in your life who want you to be happy and love you no matter what. When you are at rock bottom, it's nice to know that people that have your back. Don't ever doubt you are worthy of love.

9. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

Overcoming challenges make us into the people we are meant to be. No matter what struggles you are facing, you will come out so much stronger than you were before. Be grateful for the curve balls life throws because they will show you the strength you never thought you had.

10. This too shall pass.

The tears will stop flowing, the uphill battle will flatten out, and everything will be okay again. Have a little faith that things will get better and the sun will shine again. Your worries will soon wash away and everything will work out.

Life can be really, really hard. Sometimes, when we are struggling we don't know what to do and feel as though we will never be okay again. I promise that no matter how wrong things get they will eventually become right again. Next time everything is a mess remember these 10 things and trust that at the end of the day, you'll be okay.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
