10 Reasons Why Winter Is Not That Bad

Ahh, wintertime, the coldest and most dull days of the year! Who could ever look forward to something so unenjoyable? Well, regardless of your feelings towards winter, there are so many events to look forward to that can warm you up and make these dull days exciting.

1. The holiday season

No matter what holiday you and your family celebrate, there is a reason to celebrate this winter season. How can you not be excited about the holiday season when every store is having incredible sales, there are colorful lights all over your town, and everybody seems to be in a giving kind of mood?

2. New Years Eve

New Years Eve is arguably the best holiday of the year. Whether you go to an amazing NYE party, head into the city to watch the fireworks (which is my favorite thing to do), or you are sitting at home with your friends and family watching the ball drop, New Years Eve never fails to be the best.

3. Winter flavored everything

As an avid coffee drinker, the holiday flavors are always highly anticipated. Throughout the entire winter season most coffee shops offer delicious winter flavors like peppermint, cinnamon, and gingerbread.

4. Ice skating

Whether you are a mediocre ice skater or actually really good at it, heading to the rink with your friends never fails to be entertaining. One friend will always skate with ease, while everyone else will be holding onto the railing for dear life. Everyone gets a good laugh, and it is a prime opportunity for a cute pic to post on Instagram.

5. Gift giving

The winter season is also the season of giving. Shopping for others is great, especially when you find the perfect gift that you know your best friend is going to love. Even better than the shopping trip is when you actually get to give the gift to your friend and be the reason for the smile on her face!

6. Receiving gifts isn't too bad either

While giving is great, receiving is pretty good too. We may not love every gift that was ever given to us, but we love the fact that our loved ones were thinking of us. This mere fact makes receiving gifts that we may not really like feel that much better. But, when we do get the gift of our dreams, or, better yet, the gift that we never even dreamed of, our excitement cannot be contained.

7. Winter sports

Whether you ski, snowboard, play hockey, or enjoy sledding, there are so many enjoyable winter sports. Skiing and snowboarding take you to the mountains. Hockey takes you out to your local pond or your local indoor skating rink. Sledding takes you to the steepest hill in your town that everybody goes to when school is canceled. Wherever your favorite winter sport takes you, you are bound to have fun!

8. Winter Break

No school, no classes, and a break from all the drama involved in your life; what else could you ask for?

9. So. Many. Baked goods.

When the holiday season rolls around, so does a seemingly infinite amount of baked goods. I'm not complaining. A good apple or pumpkin pie seems to solidify the fact that it is indeed the holiday season.

10. You get to wear comfy clothes all the time.

'Tis the season for oversized sweaters! Honestly, this has to be the best part of winter because you can constantly be comfortable while keeping warm; it's a win-win!

See, winter is not as bad as you thought! You get to wear comfy sweaters that cover up all the weight you gained from eating all the baked goods, you get to consume peppermint flavored everything, you can partake in winter sports if you are daring enough to leave your warm house, and you get a pretty long vacation. How could anything get better?!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
