With exams, group projects, and trying to balance everything else college throws at you, the thought of finding an internship for the summer may just throw you right over the edge. The task of meeting application deadlines, perfecting your resume, and preparing for interviews is just too much to handle on top of everything else. However, if you stick it out, you will find there's so much you can gain from a summer internship.
1. They typically pay better than minimum wage jobs.
As broke college students, this needs no further explanation.
2. You will be able to establish connections. The woman you ate lunch with in the conference room all summer may just be the spouse of the CEO at that accounting firm you've been dying to get an interview with! Make the most of these connections. They can really help you in the long run.
3. You will learn more in the 10 or 12 weeks of your internship than you will learn in four years of classes.
Internships expose you to the real world. Everything you've been taught in the classroom really comes to life when interning. This is when that Ah-ha moment you've been waiting for happens.
4. You can potentially land a full-time job.
If you do a good job, they just might hire you!
5. Internships give you first hand experience to talk about during future interviews.
No more BSing during an interview about your proudest achievement or that one time you had to solve a difficult problem and meet a tight deadline--internships will give you something worthwhile to talk about.
6. They allow you to test out different career paths without full commitment.
7. Most internship programs offer you mentors.
Everyone always says they wish they could tell the freshman year version of themselves everything they know now. Well, this is exactly what a mentor can do for you! Learn from their experiences and set yourself up for a successful future.
8. They allow you to do what you love.
Unless you LOVE working at a fast food restaurant... if that's the case, then I think Sonic down the road is hiring. You're probably an accounting major for a reason: Put your passion to work!
9. Having an internship is the perfect opportunity to buy cute new business clothes.
If you're sick and tired of wearing that one godawful suit you bought going into your freshman year for every presentation you do, now is the perfect opportunity to expand your business wardrobe.
10. Potential for free food and coffee
.
Big-wig CEOs are just like us--they crave sugary foods and rely on caffeine to function throughout the day! More often than not, leftovers from conferences and other meetings are put in the break room for everyone else to eat!
Wherever you may be in the process of applying for internships, keep it up. The stress, anxiety, and sleepless nights will all be worth it in the end.
