10 Reasons Sibling Relationships Matter

With the Holiday Season now in full force and families are beginning to come together to celebrate, it got me thinking about how important family actually is. Many of us have to travel far distances in order to reconnect, while some, are only a drive away. In many cases, parents are dealing with the fact that their children are growing older and it is starting to get more difficult to spend time with one another; my family being one of those cases. My brother is three years older than me and trying to spend time with him during our breaks is becoming much more challenging. Why? I think it is because we don't make time for each other. But I think, this is wrong. Our relationship should be a top priority. These should be the most 10 important reasons why this relationship is so important.

1. When our parents are gone, we are all we've got

Some day when our parents are no longer here to bring us together for the holidays, it is our jobs to reconnect and remain close. Even throughout the rest of the year it is always good to catch up and be informed on what is going on in each other's lives.

2. They know you like no one else does

All those years of growing up and scheming against our parents to create that sibling bond that no one can compare to. Or knowing what little things will tick the other sibling off in order to gain an advantage.

3. Being another supporter to the many accomplishments we make in life

Nothing is better than having your brother/sister cheer for you or be proud of all the amazing things you are doing in life. They can give you constructive criticism more so than your parents.

4. When you need advice on something and you can't ask Mom or Dad

There are certain things only siblings can help you solve that your parents shouldn't know about, like what window is the best to sneak in when your coming home late from a party.

5. To be your protector

For me, I have an older brother and there is nothing that makes me happier than when he stands up for me or scares away an ex boyfriend because he broke my heart.

6. Having someone to share common interests or to do fun activities with

Who is the most fun person to go to the bars with in your family? Your siblings, duh! Especially if they are older, they want to make sure you are having the time of your life just like they were having when they were your age.

7. They are someone to lean on in tough times

If your parents are arguing or something is going on in your life that isn't working in your favor, you siblings should always be someone you can call for a helping hand.

8. They can be your "parent's little helpers"

When it comes time to go shopping for an holiday, your siblings know exactly your taste. They've been paying attention over the years to the new trends and fashion statements you prefer. When your parent goes to grab that bright pink scarf, you know your sibling will say, "Mom/Dad her favorite color is blue" or "That color won't match with many of her clothes"

9. They are someone who can be harder on you because the punishment is less

If you are doing something wrong in life, your sibling is someone who can "give it to you straight." There is no holding back with sibling criticism, they know it's only for the best.

10. They are your role model

Especially with older siblings, they teach you everything in life. They show you how to act, how to be prepared for certain things in life. They can be someone to help you when you're older whether or not that's with cooking or even showing your son how to throw a baseball.

When it all boils down to it, your sibling should always remain

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
