On May 8, we celebrate our mothers a little more than usual. We shower them with gifts, cards, good food, family togetherness, and love. We post Instagrams of our moms, and formulate tiny captions that speak volumes about how thankful we are for our mothers. Mother's day reminds us of how important our moms are, but we should remember this every day. My mom isn't just my hero on this day in May; she's been my hero since before I was born. I have no idea where I would be without my mom. She's my favorite person to laugh with, the best person to vent to, the most comforting shoulder to cry on, the best advice giver, the best shopping partner, and so much more. My mom is hands down my best friend. She's seen every side of me, and still has my back all the time; no matter what. I think our moms deserve more than just one day of this extra appreciation. Here are 10 qualities that make my mom extraordinary. These are her superhero superpowers:
1: She's selfless
My mom lives for her family. She will put everyone before herself; every time. Being at a selfish point in my life (my 20's), I can't wrap my head around how someone has the strength to always put others before themselves. The best part? This makes her happy. She is happy to let me borrow her jewelry (and keep it), to give me the better flavor of whatever candy we are eating, give me the window seat, to give me the coupons and free samples, etc. It's the little things, and the big things. She'll drive hours to pick me up at school. She waited hours during my ballet classes, and was there whenever I needed her. My happiness is her happiness, and I think that is beautiful.
2: She's trustworthy and loyal
I can confidently trust my mom with my life. She knows my biggest secrets, my deepest thoughts and feelings, and all of my endless questions. I know she values and respects me and everything I tell her. She's loyal, and I can trust that she will always have my best interests in mind. She will always be on my side, even when I am wrong. That's how much she believes in me. She's my most reliable, best friend in the whole world. There is something special about confidently knowing that you always have an ally.
3: She's strong
My mom stronger than steel. She's lived through a lot, and is stronger because of it. She knows what she wants, and how to get it. She can endure a world of pain to ensure that her kids are okay. She'll fight for us, work hard to support us, and will not accept anything less than the best for us. Throughout every bump in the road; the turbulent toddler years, the angsty teen years, she has never once ceased in loving us. She does it all with a smile on her face. I'm so lucky to have this strong, amazing woman as my role model.
4: She's honest
While my mom loves me and always has my back, she will tell me the honest truth when I am wrong. She will tell me when my outfit isn't cute or when I have food in my teeth. She tells me when I need to push myself more, because she knows what I am capable of, sometimes more than I do. She will give me pure, honest advice. She will tell me what I need to hear. She doesn't sugar coat things, because life isn't always sweet. She tells it like it is, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
5: She's organized
My mom is totally type A. She knows everyone's schedules; where everyone needs to be and when. She always plans our vacations, as well as most everything else in our lives. She's always on the ball. She can multi-task like a pro. She's on top of everyone's lives better than we are individually. She knows every detail, and is never late. That direction and drive is so hard to perfect; but she does it flawlessly.
6: She's smart
My mom is the smartest woman I know. Why google something, when I can just ask my mom? She sets the bar high, because her credentials are excellent. She is resourceful and innovative. She is the best for having intellectual, factual conversations, as well as deep, emotional conversations about life. She teaches me new things all the time. She is knowledgable in so many fields, and I hope to be that well rounded one day. She is book smart and street smart.
7: She's fun!
I have so many laughs with my mom! Things can be serious, but when things are lighthearted I can't stop laughing. I can spend endless hours with my mom, and there is never a dull moment. Her sense of humor is relevant, witty, and silly all at the same time. She makes everything fun. I especially enjoyed college visits with my mom because she always made them so much fun! I always enjoy time spent with my mom; my best friend!
8: She's supportive
If I need to vent, she's there. If I need to cry my eyes out, she's there. If I need to make a tough decision, she's there to listen as long as I need her to, and then she's there to offer the best advice. She's my #1 cheerleader. She always believes in me, and sees the best in me. She reminds me of that all the time, and that helps immensely. She always reminds me of how lucky I am, and that there is always something to smile about. She is always there to throw me a compliment, and make me feel good about myself, inside and out.
9: She's courageous
It's hard to be the mother of three children who are close in age (one older brother, one set of twins). It's hard to have to quit your job when one of your kid needs extra care. Its hard to juggle a family, with kids who have all different interests. It's hard to give your children every opportunity possible. Its hard to balance your own needs and the needs of four other family members. It's hard when all the weight seems to fall on your shoulders. It's hard to know that everyone relies on you all the time. It's hard to pull the weight. It's hard to be selfless. It's hard, but my mom does it all. She never gives up, ever. She accepts challenges and accepts nothing but the best for her children. She sets an incredible example, all at the same time. She is fearless; she is brave.
10. She loves unconditionally!
My mom would love us, no matter what we did. She has loved us through the good and the bad, the ugly and the pretty. She's loved me when I was mad and said I hated her. She never stopped loving me, even when I broke curfew and disobeyed her. Through thick and thin, her love remains. She loved me during my dance performances, proms, graduations, and all the other milestones. She loves me no matter what, always. Her heart is bigger than anything.
My mom is my favorite person in the whole world. I don't know where I would be without her. She is my role model, my cheerleader, my advisor, my stylist, my chef, my therapist, my coach, and my best friend. She is my superhero, because she has so many powers and makes the impossible possible. My mom is responsible for so much of who I am today. I am eternally grateful to my mom: the best influence in my life. Thank you for everything mom, you're the best and I love you always and forever.
