It usually isn't easy for us kids to admit that our parents are cool. But when you have a dad as awesome as mine, it's simple. There are hundreds of reasons why my dad is cooler than yours, but here's just a few just in time for Father's Day.
1. He could probably out-cook anyone.
I've never had a bad experience with anything he's cooked. His skill level is actually a little scary. He never measures anything, and knows most of the recipes he uses by heart. If I could be at least a quarter of the cook he is, I'd be in good shape.
2. He makes a point to befriend our neighbors.
We've lived in a few different houses now since I was little, and I always remember being able to wave to our neighbors, or stop and talk to them every once in a while. He really goes out of his way to show them he cares.
3. He's hilarious.
His humor goes way beyond the weird dad jokes. While he has cracked some pretty good ones, like "Hi, Hungry. I'm Dad," and "No, I didn't get a haircut. I got all of them cut," he's actually really funny. Whenever I'm really feeling down, I know I can always count on him to make me laugh.
4. He has the biggest heart.
Seriously. It's enormous. Whenever he sees an opportunity to really make someone happy, he takes it and runs with it. Everything he does goes above and beyond what's expected in the best way.
5. He's a great friend.
I know I can always go to him with anything I would ever need, and that he will listen. I've also watched him maintain some really good friendships with some really old friends. It's one thing to have a really great dad, but it's even better when he's also one of your best friends.
6. He's super smart.
He's like a walking search engine. I can ask any question about pretty much anything and he can almost always answer it. He loves explaining how things work and how things are made, which is something I never get tired of.
7. He makes time for what matters most.
He gets up really early for work so he can spend more time with family at night. He spends hours preparing for family trips, even if they'll only last a day or two. And if we ever have something going on for school, he makes it a priority to be there no matter what.
8. He is the definition of a handyman.
Watching him fix and build things is amazing. It's crazy how he can look at something and know exactly what it needs and how to make it better.
9. He values quality time.
He's told us kids multiple times to "get off our phones and be sociable," and I couldn't be more thankful for it. We live in such a technology-driven world, and the fact that he hasn't let it change his ways is inspiring.
10. He's supportive.
I know that no matter what I choose to do with my future, he will always be there.
