10 Reasons Why Growing Up Actually Sucks

If only we could go back to our younger selves to tell them it isn't that fun...

Most of us have already started to expose ourselves to the harsh realities of the real world. And once you’ve crossed that line, it’s hard to go back because you’ve intertwined yourself in responsibilities and commitments you can’t back out of. You’ve seen the world and you can’t un-see it.

Here are just 10 of the reasons why growing up sucks:

1. It's not as fun as you thought it'd be.

You probably thought being in your late teens - early 20's meant living hella happy with a nice education and your own little apartment and having your life already set out. But nope; the only expectation that was met was your age.

2. Paying bills.

Every time you get a bill in the mail, an angel dies.

3. Schoolwork gets harder.

You're obviously going to start with upper division courses, which mean more research papers, more application to the field, more readings... just kill me now.

4. The pressure is on to start looking for a JOB.

Graduation is so close and what comes after graduation is either graduate school or a job. Or you can always go back to living with your parents and chill (HA!).

5. The real world is creeping up on you.

You know you need to start applying for jobs, people around you are getting engaged and having kids, and you're here still eating Lunchables.

6. You won't have the comfort of being with college guidance.

If you think about it, college is kind of like the last exit in San Diego before Mexico that says, "Last USA Exit".

7. Your sorority / fraternity days are almost over aka no more date parties, philanthropies, Monday meetings...

It wasn't all fun, but it was fun. Alum status, I'm coming for you.

8. Wrinkles.

The fact that they are irreversible totally makes it better.

9. You get tired really early at night.

*yawns* "I'm tired." *checks time, 8:47 p.m.*

10. You want others who are younger than you to get their lives together so you can be on the same level, but you also want them to live their freshmen / sophomore years the right way.

You're too old for messing around and wasting time, but still too young to do more adult things.

Growing up is something we all have to deal with one way or another. Right now, take the uncomfortable situations as testing the waters. Once the water feels nice and warm, trust yourself in handling the waves.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
