Though the Millennial cohort catches quite a bit of flack from older, more mature generations, we are undoubtedly making changes in the world. We all know how difficult it can be to cope with change or even be the source of innovation, but our unique and fiery traits are what make us so successful. The culture we have grown up in encourages us to break the status quo and push the limits, even challenging authority if needed. Millennials are, and always will be, the greatest influence on the generations directly after us.
Here are 10 reasons to be proud of our generation.
1. We are (literally) changing the world.
As one of the most studied generations in history as well as one of the largest (80 + million strong), Millennials are redefining multitasking and are breaking down barriers.
2. We care about each other.
Our generation is very social-minded and appreciates teamwork, unlike the über independent Gen Xers.
3. We always find the silver lining.
We are highly optimistic despite tragedies like 9/11 and Columbine. Our generation has risen to the challenge and is making changes instead of cowering in fear. We are determined to establish a better life for those following in our footsteps.
4. We are diverse.
Millennials are one of the most diverse and tolerant generations in history. We strive to improve minority livelihood, are comprised of a record low percentage of Caucasians, and 11 percent of us are born to at least one immigrant parent.
5. We are slowly changing the human mind.
We are extraordinary multitaskers, slowly rewiring our brains to cope with a much more extensive use of social media. In short, Millennials are causing our brains to evolve. How cool is that?
6. We like to take action.
Though psychologists and researchers believe that Millennials are overly self-confident, self-absorbed, and care less about others, we actually encourage political involvement, we are very community oriented, and are far more compassionate than previous generations.
7. We have very high standards.
Our generation has upheld the standard of being good parents (thanks again, Gen X), prioritize service, and place a higher value on spirituality and happiness than on wealth.
8. We are super smart.
Millennials have the highest rate of high school graduation (72 percent) and college enrollment (68 percent) in over two decades. Over half of us will or have already obtained a bachelor’s degree within six years.
9. We know how to have fun.
Our generation scores highly in extraversion, elf-esteem, high expectations, and assertiveness on personality tests. Remember when they said we were “lazy”?
10. We strive for the best.
Millennials are well on our way to becoming the most educated generation in history.
11. We overcome controversy.
Regardless of the controversy we face of the criticism from our “older and wiser” counterparts, Millennials continue to break new ground.
Despite what the assumptions may be, the statistics do not lie; our generation is changing the face of our country. Our choices and values will leave a lasting impact on young minds, regardless of whether we believe it or not. May we continue to break down barriers and set new standards.
