It's that time of the year again, when teddy bears, gift baskets, and heart-shaped chocolates and pillows take the place of Christmas decorations. Depending what status your love life is in, the sight of such things may disgust, depress, or excite you. Many singles, however, don't feel any of these three emotions towards Valentine's Day, they just don't care because they're okay with where they are in their love lives. Here are ten things that you can say to the person who asks you why you're single.
1. You Want To Learn How To Love Yourself
When you're in a relationship, it's a two person thing. There needs to be an equal and plentiful amount of trust, honesty, and communication. Often times, insecurities affect all three of these necessary components of a healthy and successful relationship. Many insecure singles believe that having a boyfriend or a girlfriend will help them to become more confident in themselves but that is not always the case. Confidence and self-love are things that need to come from within because when it does, no one can ever take them away from you. At the end of the day it just comes down to this: If you don't learn love yourself for every part of who you are, then how will you know that someone else truly loves you for every part of who you are?
2. You Want To Focus
A relationship in college isn't a bad thing, but don't fret if you don't have a boyfriend or girlfriend because that just means you have more of yourself to give to other parts of your life. As college students, school is one of the top items in a long list of priorities. There's also friends, family, work, sports, clubs, church, volunteering, sororities, fraternities and so much more.
3. You're Changing
College is such a transition period. It changes your thoughts, behavior, and even personality. This can often change any of your relationships, not just the romantic ones. It creates stress in a relationship because qualities that were originally attractive may not even exist later on, just as qualities you find flawed may appear later in a significant other, that didn't exist at first. It is often said that people don't change, but I don't buy into that. People change all the time and so do relationships.
4. It's Not the Right Timing
There's rarely going be a moment in life when you say to yourself, "Yes, right now, at this very moment in time, this is absolutely the perfect time for me to start a relationship with this guy or girl." However, you know yourself and your situation. You know if it is good or bad to have a relationship at whatever point you are in life. Maybe you started a tough new job or you just got out of a previous relationship. Whatever the case may be, you don't feel that you are ready or fully capable of investing into a relationship at this time.
5. It's Never Too Late
The best part about being single is knowing that there is always the possibility to start a new relationship. You can decide, at any point, that you want to begin something new.
6. It's No One's Business
You can do whatever you want. Your relationship, or lack thereof, is your business. You have your reasons and you don't need them to be validated by other people who think you should be in a relationship.
7. You Have Higher Standards
Often times singles are labeled as people who can't find someone to be with. Well, that's not the case here. You don't want to lower your standards and settle for any guy or girl that you go out with. The point of dating is to ultimately find someone you want to spend your life with. You're allowed to be picky and you're allowed to have high standards, just remember to not set the standard so high that it's almost impossible for anyone to meet them.
8. You Can be Selfish
You can virtually do what you want, when you want, without worrying about another person. As previously mentioned, good communication is important in a successful relationship but if you're not in one, you don't have to communicate a darn thing.
9. You Want Your Own Identity
It can be very easy to lose yourself in another person. Being single allows you to find who you are without someone who could be holding you back or pushing you too hard.
10. You're Happy Being Single
You don't feel like you need a man or a woman to make you happy. That comes from the joy of your own beating single-heart. You enjoy where you are in life and you want it to stay that way. It's not forever, you may eventually want a relationship but that's all up to you. For now, you're happy and enjoying not being in a relationship.
Relationships are hard. Being Single can be hard. One isn't better or worse than the other. Everybody has their reasons for being where they are in life. The single life is a great life. Never let anyone make you feel ashamed or embarrassed for it.
