Do you agree that "journalism is dying" or "the media sucks"? Good, stop right here. This article isn't for you. Who would ever want to major in something that gives you access to the world and report current events. I know it sounds awful to have the opportunity to meet people from all over the world and even meet and interview some celebrities.

The only thing journalists even do is provide the entire world with information, shed light on government and world affairs, and give the outside world an inside look on what goes on behind closed doors. Journalism truly is just an integral part to our democracy, and majoring in Journalism is nothing more than just a lot of scholarly research, challenging multimedia projects, and analyzing and breaking large, complicated documents and decisions for others to easily understand.

Sounds like a doomed, unneeded major right? WRONG. Journalism majors are some of the most talented, needed, and well rounded students out there.

So, when people question why you are majoring in Journalism/ Mass Communications

....respond with some of these!

1. We can write well, very well.

Give a journalism any topic to write on, and they can do it. Not everyone in the world needs to know how to calculate the standard deviation of a random set of variables, but everyone needs to know how to write. Journalism majors can just happen to do it in a stylistic, persuasive and grammatically correct way.

2. We are well rounded and well informed

Because journalists cover everything from political affairs to technology, they instantly become "mini-experts" on so many topics. We know A LOT of information, and we always have the update on world happenings.

3. Work never becomes a routine.

Journalists walk in the news room everyday and can never exactly predict what is going to happen. Our work is constantly evolving, unpredictable, and changes just as fast as the world does

4. The world literally depends on us.

How else would the world truly know about Michael Jackson's death, 9/11, and presidential elections? We are the gatekeepers of information for the public. You can send us a thank you note later!

5. We get to meet the world's most important people

How many other professions require you to spend in afternoon with President Obama, and ask him questions about his life and political ideologies? Not that many. Journalists get paid to talk to some of the most influential people on the planet. This is also why journalism majors know how to network like crazy!

6. We get easier access to some of the world's most important events

Two magic words: Press Pass. Journalists are invited to attend award shows, major supreme court hearings, special sporting games, Hollywood and DC parties, and international events. Our job is so much more than sitting in a cubicle from 9 a.m.- 5p.m. Thank. You. Jesus.

7. We can call the shots most of the time

Yes, we do have a boss. (our editor). However, journalists often have a great amount of freedom for their assignments. Creativity and Uniqueness is crucial in our industry, and we often have the chance to let it shine through our own work. A good journalist knows how to put them self out there and tackle any story or interview from an alluring perspective.

8. Our classes are engaging and very hands-on

Organic chemistry... Calculus two? No, no no. Our classes are captivating and always relevant. They involve producing self-made news stories and packages, attending press conferences, and visiting news rooms. The world is our classroom, and fortunately we are not restricted to lecture halls and labs.

9. Journalists are punctual... Deadlines are everything.

You can count on us to always arrive on time. We have it absolutely engrained that time matters, and tardiness is not allowed.

10. We don't just do it for the money

While we we may not make $90,000 straight out of college, we make lifetime connections, stimulate and generosity curiosity, and hold one of the most entertaining jobs out there. Journalist majors major in journalism because they are truly passionate about it, not just because they expect job security and high paying jobs right away.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
