Spring Break is a time when many college students jet off to places like Miami and Cancún to let loose during their spring semester. For those of us who are not, we are filled with serious FOMO and are extremely jealous of those who will be spending a week in bikinis while drinking Coronas on the beach. Although not going away with your friends can be upsetting, spending spring break at home might actually be the best thing you could do.
1. Spending time with your family. A week of family time can be very uplifting for those who easily get homesick during the semester. There’s nothing better than catching up with siblings and your extended family, who you don’t get to see very often.
2. Seeing your pets. Need we say more? Everyone misses their pets while at college, and break is the perfect time to cuddle with your furry one — something you certainly don’t get if you go away.
3. Seeing old friends. Why spend the break with your school friends, when you can spend it with some of your high school friends who you don’t get to see often? Spring Break is the perfect time to catch up with some of your old besties. If they don’t have the same break as you, it could be fun to visit them at their school as well! Nothing is more interesting than checking out other colleges and their social scenes.
4. Being comfortable. The best thing about being home is that you can enjoy all the comforts that being home has to offer, rather than being stuck in a dingy hotel room. This means your own bed, no shower shoes, comfortable couches, etc. Napping in your favorite living room chair could give you the energy you need to get you through the rest of the semester.
5. Home-cooked meals. Nothing beats a home cooked meal, no matter how good your college dining hall food can be. Spring Break is a time to eliminate all your food cravings that you weren’t able to satisfy during the semester.
6. Real relaxation. If you spend spring break at home, you will really get to relax. This relaxation involves spending all week in bed and not getting up for an absurd amount of time. This is the time to catch up on all the sleep that you missed out on during the semester. Also, although napping on the beach sounds nice, most people need a vacation from their vacation. The sun can be tiring and the constant partying that most people do can be very demanding. When everyone comes back to school, you will be the only one feeling fully refreshed.
7. Visiting your favorite hometown places. You will be able to eat at your favorite restaurants and visit all your favorite places that you miss dearly while you're away. Nothing can beat it.
8. Not spending a week in shambles. For most people, Spring Break is a time to be crazy and ratchet, while not caring at all. You should be happy that you will not have any embarrassing stories haunt you and will not make poor choices in a foreign country. While everyone else is detailing their shambly experience afterwards, you can smile at the fact that you were refined and well-behaved all week.
9. Saving money. Spring Break at home is like a free vacation. You won’t drop thousands of dollars just for a week of fun. Saving this money means you can use it elsewhere — studying abroad, saving up for an apartment, etc. More money in your pockets is always better.
10. Just being home. Breaks, and perhaps summer, are the only times when we can actually be home nowadays. Some of us will move out right after college and even get our own places during the summers, so you should take advantage of being able to be home while you still can.
Spending spring break at home has many positives that will help you power through the rest of the semester. Take advantage of this opportunity, and don't let the FOMO get to you, because, let's face it — you are the real winner here.
