There are so many different reasons that coming home from college for the summer is a something most people don't look forward too. I chose my top ten reason to not look forward to summer vacation! I hope you can relate to at least a few of them.
1. Goodbyes
Going to university in a different state than where you live means making best friends who most likely don't live as close to you as you would like. The friends you make in college are so different from the ones you had in high school. They are family, not just someone you see 8 hours everyday and tolerate. Going home for the summer will definitely means tearful goodbyes.
2. Summer Job
Finding a job isn't the only issue that we find coming home from school, I think the bigger problem is finding a job you will enjoy or have fun at. Try not hating yourself for choosing a job at the local Dairy Queen and forget how much you hated working there when you were in high school. The three most important things when looking for a job for the summer are, looking for part time/seasonal so you have the option to come back if you want to later on. The second thing is all about LOCATION, who wants to work 40 minuets away and put the whole paycheck towards driving there? No one. The last thing is to find a job that you can fun and enjoy your time.
3. Routine Loss
College students like myself would most likely agree with me when I say, typically we are in a routine. From one semester to the next, we sleep, eat, go to class at the same time of the day every day. Coming home throws us into a whirlwind of a bad sleeping schedule turned worse, and times to eat that just are not normal to us anymore.
4. Siblings
Ahh, being the oldest has definitely had its advantages for me, driving first, graduating high school first, going to college. Yet, coming home from college to 4 younger siblings? Sometimes I worry I have a bald spot from pulling on my own hair in frustration. Something tells me by the end of summer, I will have grey hair. I don't even remember how I lived at home and tolerated them during high school. Getting back in the swing of things is going to be very difficult.
5. Chores
Have you ever been chastised for the way you load the dishwasher? No? Let me explain. There is a certain way to load said dish washing machine and if done incorrectly it was a waste of a wash and will be done. I loath loading the dish washer. First off, who even puts dishes that still have food on them in the dishwasher? I definitely do not want to be picking soggy bits of Coco Puffs out of the sink with my hands. I miss the luxury of not having dishes and simply bringing my tray back to the dish room in the dining hall. I truly praise anyone who worked in the dish room.
6. Laziness
Something about laying in bed all day seems like a breath of fresh air when it is something you can do in your own bed. Don't you agree? Even if it is all you did while at school in your dorm room. Sleep. Wakeup. Binge on Netflix. Shower. Eat. Sleep. Repeat.
7. Seeing old classmates
There is nothing I dislike more then running into people I never wanted to see again after high school. Especially when in I am in my pajamas in Walmart with half the necessary makeup finished to look semi-decent and two completely different shoes on. Obviously was in a rush to get Fruity Pebbles from Walmart.
8. Living by parents rules again
Curfew? Mom. C'mon. I used to make 2 a.m. Walmart and Kwik Trip runs and end up not getting anything. Sometimes, I would just stay up awake through my 8 am class then go back to my dorm to sleep all day. Another thing, no I most definitely do not like my room clean. If I leave it messy, I want it to be that way and will clean it soon. No one should be getting tours of my bedroom anyway.
9. Best college competition
I guess this is not a super bad thing, and having friends that got to different colleges all around the state is cool to a certain point. Having to hear why they are better then my school? Not so cool. I don't care that you are D1 or have the highest safety rating in the state. Usually it turns into being more about that person than the actual school.
10. Acceptance
Accepting that summer is here is not all bad. There are things to look forward too! Things like, being on the boat, bonfires, sleeping in, beach days, staying up late, all things good and fun for college students. To accept all things that comes with summer sooner than later only means you are just one step closer to being back at school! Start up the count down!
Don't be too hard on your parents and try to enjoy the time you have at home with them while you can! Have a great summer! Expect to hear from me soon!
